The numbers I gave were about tech workers and AI workers. Making six figure income is the norm and not the exception. There is indeed a lot politicians care about -- including increasing their vote bank.

But money is not bad too for the host country. Remember, Canada is like a socialist utopia -- at least in advertisements-- but then someone needs to pay the bills right? If you do not have enough babies, money can only come foreigners who work here.

As far as who is getting whose job is concerned, Tech industry is baised towards younger folks and till very recently was always in need of workers. Introduction of likes of LLMs for automated code generation might change it but it still takes many months to close an open position. During pandemic boom, my employer used to take up to an year to close a position.
Interestingly one of the folks I interviewed today was a young (age ~29), currently USA based developer who already has a Canada Open work permit. My guess is this is one of the 10k H1b worker who were given WPs. She is so proud her CAN WP application got approved within a week /2 weeks. She assumes that is because of her superior skills and Canada needs many people like her, more people with such ability.
She made a lot of demands
1) wants to work remote as she might want to work from the USA until the job stabilizes. My assumption is she silently plans wants to moonlight i.e. working with here current USA employer as well as work for the Canada employer.
2) Her skills are so much in demand, she wants the canada pay to be near to her USA pay. Even though we had advertised CAD pay scale about 55% of what he demanded.
I assume this is the reason there are no STEM draws as these open WP are already issued.

Guys who are waiting for invites, maybe try to relax.
This is what Marc Miller said today:

"I don’t see a world in which we lower it, the need is too great,” said Miller, who’s expected to announce new targets on Nov. 1.
“Whether we revise them upwards or not is something that I have to look at. But certainly I don’t think we’re in any position of wanting to lower them by any stretch of the imagination.”

Majority of the political class on both sides are landlords. I believe majority of the voters are landlords/boomers too, so it should be good at least for a few more years.
I believe that Canada has the capacity to accommodate that many permanent residents. Believe it or not, Canada actually builds the most homes per capita in the G7. What Canada cannot accommodate is this huge influx of temporary migrants. If you slash the number of students and temporary migrants by 40 or 50%, there’s going to be a a drastic improvement in affordability. If the government is smart, they will focus on giving international students the message that PR is not a guarantee and that many will have to go back once their education is up. They can start by capping the issuance of student visas. Their conversation rates into PR are pathetic enough with only 30% of them getting PR. The sad reality is that no one gives a crap about temporary workers and international students. They cannot vote and their low wage work barely provides anything in terms of taxes. Their situation is similar to undocumented Mexicans in the US and Indians in the Gulf. They are exploited to the max by the big corps and tossed aside once they’ve been used. It’s better to end their misery by asking them to leave once their education is up. I feel bad in the sense that many of them who are from India, are desperately trying to escape the shithole known as “India”. Having said that, it’s not Canada’s responsibility nor obligation to improve their lives. The negative consequences of allowing them to stay are far greater than the benefits.

Definitely not a shithole. A mess for sure, but, far from a shithole. Access to healthcare is better, affordability is better, etc - kind of a broken that works for so many. India provides for a lot of people who would've been left to rot in a westernized society. My point of view might appear a bit hypocritical given that I'm leaving India too, but India is the kind of broken that could work for a billion people and I'm seeing it from their eyes :)

I don't understand what you both are saying I work with a lot of IT personnel from your country, peers and bosses. They all tell me the country had improved leaps and bounds last 10 years with your current President leading the federal government, he is well respected by every leader overseas, and is doing a lot to make your country developed soon. The old federal government by Gandhi's family was supposedly bad and corrupt but now all that is over.

The truth lies in the statistics. The people who have the means to leave India, want to get the hell out of there as soon as possible. This is true for all levels of social classes. The poor in India go to the gulf and the middle class in India want to go to the west. I’ve seen people who are well established and with great lives in India, desperately trying to move abroad. Their reasoning being that for the taxes paid, India offers absolutely nothing for the the middle and upper middle class who contribute towards majority of the tax revenues. They would rather trade the lower costs of living and other comforts for whatever it is the west provides. I’m not defending the west, I’m just stating that there are even established folks in India who would give everything up to be in the west. No matter how patriotic one wants to be, the simple fact is that India isn’t a country people want to move into rather, it’s a country people want to leave.

Yet, from your statements, I’m guessing those IT personnel are all abroad. The issue is that total GDP and GDP growth is an absolutely meaningless figure if it doesn’t improve the living standards of the common folk in the country. India excels at GDP growth but the primary reason for that being excessive population. It’s absolutely dismal in terms of productivity. Hence, the GDP per capita is among the bottom tier list of countries in terms of rankings, about 127.

I keep wondering what exactly will happen if Canada stops immigration, there is no clear answer to this. Right now, Italy and Japan are the best countries to compare as their population began declining long back and they do not have mass immigration programs. In case of Japan, what I have learned is that their government needs to keep printing a ton of money to support pensions, healthcare and whatnot but this is not sustainable and supposedly will cause a lot of issues later on.

Canada cannot stop immigration. It’s just fact. The main issue in Canada is not permanent migration, it’s the amount of temporary migrants. No other country has had such a huge influx of temporary migrants within an extremely short period of time. This has naturally caused a huge breakdown in the public services offered and infrastructure. It also boosts inflation and makes the BOC’s job harder. The longer the current liberal government ignores the issues relating to international students and temporary migrants, the greater the risk of Canadians becoming hostile to all outsiders.

This is also what I have experienced in the past few years but not sure how much the government was involved. In my case, I came to Canada because they were pretty much offering citizenship of a western country while I was sitting at home and didn't want to give that up. I can always go back to India on OCI status and live there permanently and maybe use the benefits of Canadian citizenship with something else.

Not to turn this into a never ending discussion as it is "what you perceive vs what I perceive" - statistics say India is the fifth largest economy.

Regardless, people also upgrade housing, doesn't mean old house was a shithole. It is natural for people to upgrade their life in the way they perceive.

I come from nothing and I respect what really have right now. IMO don't think people here understand what a shithole really is. But I don't think one of the largest economy of the world, a talent powerhouse can be regarded as a shithole. But each to their own opinion, it's a free world!

That is true. However temporary migration will reduce with time considering the higher cost of living, and lack of jobs and increased competition. Also, Australia is playing catch up with international students by offering Indian students, post study work rights of over 7 years now (if they study in a certain region and take up degrees in skill shortage areas) - that is pretty good, compared to Canada's 3 year work rights. Also, Australia offers much high wages for entry levels. So it is a matter of time, students switch to Australia.

Lol. That would result in Canada’s population shrinking after probably 7 years. Then you start to get all the negative consequences of below replacement birth rates. No public services and negative economic growth. Unless, humans are replaced by robots in the near future. Lol.

See, India started growing after 1991 when it opened up to the idea of privatization. A lot of things have changed since then. There are issues though, and depending on who you are, you'll see them or not e.g. a male's perspective would be different from a female's perspective about safety and inclusion. So, everyone pretty much has their opinion based on what they see.
