The other half of this question (the part Parker24 didn't answer) is "your PR doesn't expire".emily_anya said:If so, whats the process to renew your PR status when you get your new passport?
Your PR card might expire, but it's a piece of identification - you need to renew it periodically if you wish to use it. Once you have become a permanent resident (by showing up at the border with the COPR and formally changing status,) you remain a permanent resident until:
* You are issued a removal order because of criminality or because you fail to meet the 730 days in the past 5 year rule AND the deadline for appealing the removal order has passed or a final ruling upholding the removal order is made;
* You voluntarily relinquish your permanent resident status
* You apply for permanent resident travel document from a visa office abroad, are refused, and fail to appeal the refusal or a final ruling upholding the removal order is made
* You become a Canadian citizen
