Yes, but immigration status is [apparently] NOT a requirement in Ontario...which seems crazy!

Are you? I'm not the Canadian here, I'm the foreigner that is sponsored. Where are you originally? I love going to the Valley, especially during Summer. I love picking all kinds of fruits. I live in Halifax right now, in Kearney Lake area. It's nice to see fellow Nova Scotians indeed :)

Do you think it has to do with the move? Maybe that caused a backlog?
I think that in addition to the moving less officer is working now on the inland apps. But that's just my opinion.

Hi guys,

I just wanted to share my experience with changing usa driver's license to ontario drivers licence. May be it will be helpful for someone.

I went to Downsview DriveTest (37 Carl Hall Road), there were 3 people before me. I filled out one simple form, wrote my current address on a piece of paper and waited for 10 minutes until the next available officer. the service was super quick and easy. All you need to have with you: 1. your original usa license(or any other interchangeable drivers license) 2. your passport 3. drivers abstract or drivers history showing when your license was originally issued. the more driving experience you have the better. if you have at least 2 years experience you get full G license in Ontario. you will do eye test, and get you paper license. in few weeks they will mail you the card.

you DO NOT need any immigration papers ( NO visa, no TRV, no landing documents... NOTHING)

Yep...I just checked...14 months!!! Just few weeks ago was 11 mths :(((
I've been tracking it steadily, the processing time goes up by 1 month every 5 weeks. Which is why it's escalated to 14 months now from 8 in February.

They're pathetically slow. From what I've heard they took a 6 month break due to government.

They're actually started processing again, just keeping up with the number of weeks passing by, but since I expect everyone working there gets the month of December off, I imagine it'll grow to 15 months by 2015.

Hello there,
I have a question and wondering if anyone can assist. I applied for PR June 23rd, 2014 with my husband as my sponsor, my application was received August 10th,2014. i can see from the processing times that they are still working on applications from august 17th last year. my problem is that i might have to leave the country for 2 weeks in May 2015, my Study permit expires end of August 2015. should i apply for an extension before leaving or can i even apply for visa extension???
Any advice???
Thank you

I had the similar experience swapping us licence for Ontario licence. The only wait was for getting drivers abstract from US state, which took abt 7 weeks to mail the abstract after I came to Canada. So if possible get abstract from us dmv if u are coming from there...thru mails takes sometimes longer.

Hello Anoushkev,

I am sure others here know more than I do, but from what I gather if you sent in an application for the Open Work Permit (OWP) along with your package, you are under what is considered 'implied status'. This allows you to stay in the country without an extension of a visa... however it does not allow you to extend work or study permits. So you would be able to stay in the country, but not continue studying past May 2015.

As for leaving the country, because it's before your Study Permit runs out, it might be okay... but I would personally advise against it. Technically, there is no guarantee you'd be let back in to Canada on your return. I think it even says on the permit "does not guarantee re-entry".

(If that's wrong, omniscient and wise forum folks, please correct me!)
