I do agree about selling the car, but then again, if you are in a small town, there is no such thing as public transportation...and again from personal experience, even if you are on welfare...you have the RIGHT to own a vehicle so you can look for a job....at least thats how it is on Ontario...which is where OP is from....

And 100% on the mark about using the welfare system for revenge...that is just wrong, but if you end up in a part time job where you need "top up" maybe its better than having to collect a full check...but finding a job is the #1 priority for OP in my belief...
If there is no public transportation, can't you ride your own bicycle? You don't need to refuel it and it is greener, better for the environment ;D

Wow! After reading all the comments in this section, and at the risk of likely offending some people on this board, I feel compelled to take a stand in regards to this subject.

As far as I'm concerned, the OP can either get a job, (preferably) go on welfare, (if there's really no other choice) or return home to his native country. That seems to be his options, and I didn't have to resort to being a self-righteous dink about it, either. God knows we have enough blowhards like that in the world.

Somebody could take a look of my situation, and try to say the same thing. My Canadian wife has MS, and as her husband, I want to take care of her. Therefore, to the self-righteous cynics in this topic, I must be taking advantage of her to get into Canada, right? Whatever. I'm an American, and we both have similar standards of living. Try again. ::)

Yeah. The guy's situation may be suspicious, and maybe he's telling the truth. I don't care. It's not my place to judge, so let the immigration authorities do their jobs. Marriages of convenience are a serious problem, and we have that problem in spite of giving our immigrants a two year conditional green card. And yes, let's go after the bad guys that work to game the system for their own benefit. I have no problem with it. I just resent the concept of prejudging people whom we don't know as though we do know.

Also, it's no big secret that about half of all marriages in both the US and Canada end in divorce anyways, and that's under the best intentions. So really. What do these blowhards know? Maybe I want to hear all the facts first before I make my own judgement? Or is it really that much to ask?

And as for those that say it's impossible for a lawful permanent resident of the US to collect welfare because of his legal status, where are you guys getting your facts from? A Cracker Jack box? They qualify under the same rules as US citizens, and the US Government can indeed go after their sponsors if their sponsored immigrants have to go on welfare. It would be a different story if they're on a temporary visa, but why would they be on a temporary visa if they've legally immigrated as spouses?

Wow! Some people....

Maybe he made up his mind already? Maybe the cynics gave him a bad time about his issue and he ran off? Or, maybe those cynics were really calling a spade a bleeping shovel? Who knows?

I try to give people the benefit of the doubt, but if he's truly a bad actor, and not just down on his luck, then an investigation clearly needs to be made, and his butt deported. I just don't know enough about this guy's particular issue to draw any meaningful conclusion, and I don't see how anyone else can do better.

What exactly are we hoping to hear from Fafi?

"Yes, you are all right - I'm a big fraudster. After reading your posts I see the error of my ways and am turning myself over to the appropriate authorities. I will be returning to my home country immediately. Thank you all for helping me on to the straight path." Really???

But seriously, what has he got to say?

The guy came on to get some advice...I actually enjoy the lively discussion that it's turned it...but it's just that, a discussion. This isn't a courtroom for us to decide his guilt or innocence.

That's the great gift Canada has given us "freedom of speech" If i started this post I would be back to get my advice and defend myself if I'm innocent and I don't agree with welfare and this person needs to stand on his/her own two feet or go back to where he/she come from we have enough social burden.

....and there's not a darn thing wrong with freedom of speech, either. :)

With that being said however, I can't really say what I would do if I was faced with that kind of situation. Hopefully, I would've found a job already so that I could land on my own feet. That would be the ideal situation.

However, if my sponsor agreed to sponsor me, and then chose to toss me out on my ear as soon as I land, then I'll be blunt by saying that she's signed a contract, making her legally obligated to take care of my basic needs for three years. Of course, the same contract also states that I would need to make every reasonable effort to support myself - which would obviously mean getting a job. Now, I'm a proud and stubborn guy and I'll be damned if I end up having to go on welfare just to survive. However, I also know full well that there's a lot of people out of work in this day and age, and that because of that reason, it won't be easy to find any kind of work. Will it be impossible though? No. But will I be able to find work in a timely enough matter while I wouldn't need help? Realistically, I'm not too sure. Especially not in this economy.

Lastly, I still have family in the States, and going back to be with family is certainly an option. I would likely be looking for work in both countries in any case, and I would likely go to where I'm hired, irrespective of which country the job is located.

But I'll have to be honest when I say that if it was me asking for advice on what to do in this situation, and there were judgmental folks on this board already accusing me as a criminal without even knowing the whole situation, then why in the hell would I even bother to return to this forum? I know I'm not a criminal. My wife knows I'm not a criminal, and so does her family as they've all seen my clean police records. Therefore, I feel I don't have to tolerate being talked to, or otherwise be treated like a criminal. But that's just me.

But it does make me wonder how bad guys can immigrate into Canada when every prospective immigrant has to get a police certificate, and go through a background check first before they can get a PR visa to land with. Or, maybe some of these guys are really slick enough to never get caught? I don't really know, but given that the world is clearly not black and white, it therefore must be possible for these situations to happen. God knows there are people out there that are desperate enough for freedom and opportunity that they will do whatever it takes to get it. After all, the 11 million or so undocumented migrants in my country surely didn't happen by accident. ;)
