Hi there,

I have a question regarding: Is there any obligations to sponsoring new spouse after getting divorced?

One of my friends got divorced in December 2022. She was the sponsor in that relationship under the Spouse or Common-Law Partner in Canada class. She is now married to someone else and wants to sponsor her new spouse.

She originally came to Canada in 2008 through spousal sponsorship. Since then, she has sponsored two individuals: one overseas application that was refused (the person never came to Canada), and one in-Canada sponsorship that was approved.

I would like to confirm whether she can now sponsor her new spouse or if she must wait for three years due to any sponsorship restrictions.

Thank You!

When did her most recent spouse land in Canada and become a PR? She can submit a sponsorship application three years after this date. IMO she should expect a high level of scrutiny.
