@ Matt the Aussie & on-hold

Slight off topic but why it matters that much for an American/Australian to get Canadian citizenship

most of us on this forum need the passport to travel etc......because our passports...suck haha....

Im just being curious(dont wanna sound offensive etc).......it is ur RIGHT to get Canadian Citizenship in a timely manner as you all have EARNED it.

lol, not offended at all and I do get your point.

I want to have a Canadian citizenship because Canada is my home. I am proud of the fact that I came to live here. The only real "perk" or practical reason I will need a Canadian passport and such is to have much easier visits to the US. Australia may be on the Visa Waiver list in the US but it still often takes me hours to clear the road border and get the I-94 processed.

This is also why this bill annoys me so much, it just seems so pathetic. "We suck, why would an immigrant want to stay here? I know, let's make them SWEAR AN OATH that they want to live in Canada!" Seriously? How about we all just accept that Canada's one of the greatest places in the world to live, and let everyone figure out how to do that on their own terms?

All the English-speaking countries are like a weird family -- we're all different, but we kind of get along.

England -- Mom. Stay out of our business! Still co-signs for our credit cards.
USA -- annoying, loud, oldest brother. Works in a bank and brags about it. Has their own house.
Canada & Australia -- non-identical twins. Canada wears nice suits and studies accounting, Australia wrecks motorbikes, has hot girlfriend.
NZ -- baby of the family, cute, no one's sure what they're going to do

South Africa -- half-brother from a previous marriage. Drops by once in a while.

Apologies to anyone offended by this post

Agreed

having one of the world's crappy passports makes everything difficult. She can't wait to ditch the thing . . .
She'd better think twice before doing that. There are quite a few countries that are visa free for Thai citizens and that you'd need a visa for as an American/Canadian. It seems she mostly just goes where you go (North America/EU) :)

Thai passport is actually not that bad, and you're right, Thai citizens can visit Brazil, Russia, Turkey and Vietnam, for example, without visa, whereas Canadians do need visas to visit these countries :)

26,200 signatures today for the petition started by Josh Paterson. I said every day we get around 300 more now, but in a half a day today we got 200. Maybe it will go to 400 daily.

I got a reply from his organisation (BC Civil Liberties Association) today, through Facebook. Here it is:

Hi there, this morning we dropped off the petition at the Ministry of Citizenship and Immigration. We have issued e-copies of the petition and its 26000 signatures to Minister Chris Alexander, and the ministry critics in the opposition parties.

And this is good timing, because I fear CIMM might be done with the clause-by-clause 'debate' this week, and the HoC might finish the third reading even.

Speaking of today's CIMM session, Rathika was having a blast today, she was kicking ass, when Menagakis interrupted her and said she was 'cutting his voting time'. That was pure malice on his part, probably thought, I need to shut her up and I need to do it right now. The chair suspended the session, but when they come back, she still has the floor.

Tolerance, so when are you applying ?

meanwhile you sure need tolerance to put up with the kind of shocking and border line rude behavior we are seeing in the hearings - with the muzzling and other subtle and not so subtle intimidation from the Cons. I mean...was this the pleasant and gentle Canada one had envisioned coming to....looks like it has become anything but that under the present regime.

Meawhile..go Josh ! and go Supreme Court !

Hi Guys, I have mentioned long time back that the bill will pass before the summer break and got criticised repeatedly. I would like now to share my expectations on next steps. Current committee, voting on the bill and third reading will be completed by next week (June 12) if not earlier. The bill will be with the House of Senate on the week of June 16 and will be completed by the following week (subject to referral to committee). Royal assent is around June 26-30. Go live is on July 1st (Canada day) effective immediately.

From where you got all these information? is this your speculation? Is there any internal news to you that law will be effective from 1st July? You mean what minister said back in Feb that law may come effective end of 2014 all are fake now?

Dandash, I am not sure why the ministry has to wait till the bill is passed to start the changes. The changes are already arranged, posting them on the ministry’s website is pending passing the bill.

Observer:

I think your keeping something from us........is that you Chris? hahahaha

Rayman, these are not information, these are my expectations (you can take them or decline them). Per your word about the minster, the bill “may”. Not sure if “may” holds him accountable.
During the 2nd reading, the minster clearly indicated that delaying the bill till end of this year will lead to 1500,000 more applicants in the current slow system that he wants to avoid.

This whole legislative process is such a JOKE!
The committee made ZERO, I meant, 0 change to the proposed bill. which means the bill will go back to house of common for a 3rd vote. now i just cant wait when this goes into full effect!
the only hope is that we will have to wait for the concentrative party to fall in the next election, or the one after
