Hi,

Here is my situation, I am currently on a visitor visa and have recently submitted my Inland Application (being sponsored by my husband)

I have also enclosed my OWP application along with my Inland application package so now I m on implied status.

However, my Alberta Health card is expiring this month and they said they need a visa extension, PR or Work Permit to be able to renew my card. What should I do, have any of you been in this situation? should I also apply for visitor visa extension. I still have a week left before my 6 month stay period expires.

Please give me advice.

Thanks

Well, if you want to renew your Alberta Health card, why don't you get a visa extension? It costs 100$ but that's still way cheaper than purchasing private health insurance. You can do it online, you just have to do it before your current 6 month stay expires. They take about 3 weeks to grant you the extension and a few days more to mail the actual paper to you.

I don't think so. I have heard of people asking for 1 year and getting only 6 months, or something like that. But that's no problem (except you would have to extend your visitor status again (if you need) and pay the 100$ again.)

All you have to do is show proof that you have funds for your stay. We sent screenshots of my bank statements and bank statements of our joint account.

The solution to your Alberta health card:
Just ask your husband to call Alberta health services and tell them that u have applied for PR and the application is in process and u need an extension to your health card. They will extend your health card for 90 days simply just on a phone call.
In the meantime u can apply for visa extension( before your current visa expires) which will keep u in status till you get your Aip letter.

A bit off topic here, but do you have any instructions or suggestions as per how to apply for alberta health care if my wife is currently here on a tourist visa?
I do plan for inland sposorship soon.

yes you may add your dependents (wife and kids) to your alberta health card if they have a valid status in canada ( i.e even if they are on a visit visa) they will have their own health card with an expiry date on it (valid till their visit visa is valid).
first talk to alberta health services on phone explain them that your wife is here on visit visa and you want to add her in your alberta health card and you need to know the requirements.
once the alberta health services representative tells you that you can apply and your wife is eligible for the health care goto nearby registry office and fill up the forms. they will require your health card number, your id, your wife original passport etc.
In case the registry office refuses (which sometimes happens) you can call alberta health services right away (by cell phone) while standing there and connect them with the registry representative.
if approved you will get your wife health card by post in 3,4 weeks ( you can also re-visit registry office after 1 week and get your wife health card number if you need it before her printed health card comes by mail)

Yeah, thats what my husband did. We went to the registry, they gave us a form to fill and asked for the copy of my passport and visit visa.

For how long I can request for the extension? I am scared of refusals...because if the extension is refused, you will have to leave Canada, I have read it somewhere.

Is this is a possibility in my case? Please need expert advice on this.

Thanks

Hi.
I just want to say i got my extension today :), i applied saying i wanted to stay with my partner during our PR for common law application. I asked for one year however my passport expires on June 2015. I sent with the visitor application an email of my embassy saying that I could renew my passport in Canada closer to the expired date, however that didnt worked. CIC granted me exactly one month before my passport expires, visitor record goes to May 2015. Just so you know thats something else to consider.
This is my second visitor extension, first one i asked for 6 months to get common law status and I was granted 6 months no problem, i reapplied before it expired and i never had to leave canada.

Sorry for asking more in your post but I was hoping someone can help me understand how the health card works, I am in BC, can my partner get me a health card if we are in a common law relationship? Does it works that way too? We are applying outland and now i got a visitor record but i had no idea a health card was a possibility.

thanks everyone and good luck with your application!

Well, I heard here someone saying that while you are on implied status in BC, u can get a health card on account for your spouse. But u can check and confirm with them in BC.

We didn't know about it either and my husband called Alberta Health and they told us the whole process.

My passport is also expiring in April 2015. I am confused. ::)

If you've only just submitted your inland app, request 13 months. Provided you can show proof of sufficient finances, it will not be refused. You MUST submit this extension app before your current visitor status expires.
