Anybody got any updates? None here, still in process on ecas, and didn't get a response to the email I sent last week asking for an eta.
Sort of! I just checked my ecas and I have been changed to Decision Made. I am sitting at my parents' home waiting for my copr so I can land and start my job, so I am triple crossing my fingers that it's in the mail. Here's the timeline so far:

PPR: Oct 19
sent passport scan by email: Oct 22
response to email asking for update saying "copr issued this week" : Nov. 19
Decision Made update on ecas: Nov. 25

Sort of as well. eCas is still "In Process", but sent another email this morning and the officer responded to tell me that it "WILL" be sent this week...

Ugh! If I was told it would take another month, that's fine, but they really need to stop saying "It's on the way!" when it's not exactly...

They said it "should" be sent last week and it wasn't. This week they're saying it "will" be sent, so perhaps speaking in absolutes is a good sign. I can't imagine the government, and especially CIC, uses those frequently. I know it's coming from Ottawa, so I expect it by end of week.

I hope so - you've been waiting quite a while (and seeing other March people get their COPRs assuages my own sense of guilt. LOL)

As long as it arrives in the next 7-10 days, I don't care that this stage took a bit longer than expected. I know there are quite a few April and Marchers (who applied later in the month) that received theirs already, but at the same time a lof of Febs and Jans seemed to have gotten passed over. We had always assumed that we'd be done the process by end of 2012, so our expectations have been in line. I've been much calmer since PP on the 19th of last month, but 6 weeks since then to send COPR is approaching the limit of my patience :)

I certainly agree with that. My main frustration comes in that I could have been working in the time since the PPR, but I didn't get my work visa, assuming (and told that it "should" be soon) that I could just land directly with the PR instead of doing it twice. If I had known it would be 1.5 months from PPR, I would have just done my work visa in the meantime...

But yes! Still super appreciative when others have been waiting longer.

That sucks, but at least you have a job waiting for you and an employer willing to wait. My wife is in a similarly lucky situation where we found an employer willing to wait until she landed. Many others don't get to hit the ground running and run into unexpected snags. I'm pretty grateful that nothing unexpected has happened and our processing has been in line with what we imagined it would be. Many others on here are not so fortunate, even ones that researched and prepared well.

Where will you be working out of?

I would be nice to land/move prior to the end of 2012. If nothing else to be able not split file taxes in 2013 across two countries with two incomes in two different denominations. Trans-border tax professional, you can buy that boat next year.

Never fear - you'll get to enjoy cross-border tax return filing for the rest of your life. One of the benefits of being a US Citizen - my US tax return this year was ~100 pages, mostly "informational returns" since they are paranoid that expats are cheating the US government out of tax revenue. My net US tax bill? $330. The year before it was $1 dollar. That wasn't how much I had to pay (I received refunds both years) but rather how much my total tax liability was.

If you think you can avoid filing, think again, because they now check this when you try to renew your US passport.

Oh I'm well aware of the expat tax. :/ I'll pay the money for a professional to handle it and not be stressed about it.

But it is nice to hear that you ( and hopefully us) don't have to pay tax. I figure it is much like living in one state and working in another. The state you work in takes into account you are a resident of another. It's just easier since, everybody is using the same system. Pisses my wife off to no end since she is Canadian and gets mad that she has to pay tax back to the US. She jokingly (because it cost so much freaking money) said she was going to renounce her US citizenship after landing.

I've found that the cost can be rather high - quotations I received for my personal return ranged from $10-30k. I decided to do my own for that amount, so I've become increasingly familiar with how much worse they keep making the US tax code for expats.

The Canada/US tax treaty is quite important. One thing I recently learned is that under US law the proceeds of your life insurance paid to someone outside the US (like a Canadian spouse) who is not subject to US taxation is subject to a 30% withholding. Under the terms of the Canada/US tax treaty you can file a W-8BEN form and claim a tax treaty benefit, reducing that amount down to zero. There are other oddities - like if you take a premature withdrawal from a US IRA and live in Canada, the 10% penalty will count as a foreign tax for Canadian tax purposes, which effectively means you don't pay a penalty in almost all cases.

Oh, and I'd avoid Canadian TFSA's (10 pages of paperwork per TFSA account and it's not tax free under US tax law.) Canadian RRSPs are not so bad - that's a one page form. But only for Canada. Any other country with an IRA/401(k)/403(b) equivalent and you're filling out the 10 page informational return.

My favourite question: if you have an account with Ally Canada, is it a foreign bank under US law? Remember, it's 78% owned by the US Treasury.

If you REALLY want to make things difficult, try living in Canada with a same-sex spouse. How do you interpret the word "spouse" under the treaty? Pursuant to Canadian law or US law? Ah, the mind boggles.

The most expensive legal questions I've ever asked are about cross-border taxation. Last time I asked what I thought was a simple question it cost the company $12k.
