Vow, when you extend visa - you need physical passport to extend?

Yes unfortunately I need my passport as UK visa rules are very strict.. I have written to the Canadian embassy regarding this issue and called back my passport on the 02nd of Jan, I do not expect them to reply so soon but atleast wanted to know if they do reply to such requests

You submitted passports over a year ago. Have you received any correspondence from the VO for remedicals as they have expired? It is likely that CIC might have extended the validity of the medicals for 3 months and there is a high possibility that your parents application is in the final stages of processing and hopefully visa will be issued. My advice to you is to be patient and wait for a few months. In the meantime order GCMS notes. I have read posts in this forum that people got their passports back on request but none from ND as far as I know because there is no proper way of communicating with NDVO. In general, you may send an email and you do not know where it has gone and you wont get a reply either.

I will surely let you know if I get any response from them.. I went through a lawyer and they are very confident that they will return the passport in time. So I can only keep my fingers crossed and hope for my luck to work this time.. Else I am in a total mess as it is gonna be an illegal default on my behalf to stay in London beyond 23rd Jan :(
