Hi Guys,

I would like to share with you today experienced at ServiceOntario. I booked an appoint b'cas we got the BOWP last week. So wanted to renew OHIP card.

But, ServiceOntario Staffs have asked my current employer letter. I have asked them why you want b'cas you did not ask me first time and second time renewal? They told me that your employer name was mentioned in closed-work permit documents. Currently, I am on open work permit so you can't get OHIP card straight forward.

Now, I am going to ask my employer to provide me letter for OHIP card renewal.

Anyone in forums has suffered this kind of incident in past.

That's right - you need to get a letter from your employer to prove that you are working because the OHIP coverage is contingent on you having a full-time job. See: http://www.health.gov.on.ca/en/public/publications/ohip/temp_foreign.aspx

And yes, I was asked to produce a letter from my employer when I applied to renew my health card using a BOWP.

You're wrong. As BOWP holder you don't need LOE or job offer to be eligible for ohip. When I renewed my ohip based on BOWP, a lady didn't ask me for such letter. But, I guess not everyone working there knows the rules.

You may be eligible for the Ontario Health Insurance Plan (OHIP) if you are included under one of the following categories:

you are a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, landed immigrant or are registered as an Indian under the Indian Act;
you have submitted an application for permanent residence in Canada, and Citizenship and Immigration Canada has confirmed that you meet the eligibility requirements to apply for permanent residence in Canada;

As per rule, it seems, you even don't need work permit (i wonder if tourist visa is enough) to be eligible for ohip as long, as PR application is in process.

Applicants with BOWP do not need to show employment letters.. i applied for my OHIP and took all the letters but the person at the counter told me they dont need it since i have BOWP and my application states APR (Applicant Permanent Resident) status.

Hi Friend ...I had experienced the same issue like you - the officer who handled my ticket asked for employer letter but the other officer sits beside him told that its not needed. what you can do is ..just inform them that this is type of CASE 27. They should understand. I renewed without employer letter, Sure you too.

All the best.

I requested them to renew mine and family OHIP card. But they are not ready to provide and asked me to get employment letter. I am not sure whether my employer will provide or not.

Hi As per OB485 A, please find the following

The open WP will be issued under authority of R205(a) and will be coded as follows:
•Validation Exemption Code: C-10
•NOC: 9999000
•Intended Occupation: Open
•Case Type: 27 – Under examination

I don't know how you got case type 54 in Bridging open work permit.

Anyhow visit the service Ontario again and if you meet a different officer and if you are lucky then you will get renewed without employer letter.

And If you can get an employer letter quickly, then do it and close.

They didn't request mine either. I assume one doesn't need as many documents to renew OHIP as to apply for the first time.

Although the manual for BOWP says that continued provincial health care coverage is assured, the provinces set their own rules. In the case of Ontario, the requirement to be employed full-time is still in force until you become a permanent resident (or you're very close to becoming one).

Not quite - it's not enough for your PR application to just be in process. They need a thing from CIC that says you have been found eligible. The "Request for RPRF and updates" email is an example of this; the AOR isn't.

For safer side, I have asked already my current employer to provide me letter. So I can renew my OHIP card.

But, I have started this thread so, other people just like me can understand situation before going to serviceOntario.

Not true. The requirement is similar to the requirement for getting BOWP.

"you meet the eligibility requirements to apply for permanent residence" - you meet this requirement once you get AOR

When I visited Service Canada after getting my BOWP . they asked for Employer letter.
Fortunately I was carrying that letter.

Employer mentioned some earlier date for my release from Project (on the other hand my BOWP is till Sep 2015).
So OHIP card issued me with expiry date, what my employer mentioned in letter NOt till my BOWP expiry date
So frustrating :(

Does anyone know what's the time taken for getting OHIP mailed to your address?
