My spouse was in the USAF, and away for a year oversea's, at the base. We only got the FBI records check.... since he was oversea's on remote tour should we have got one for the country out there? Gosh, I hope not! We used his US address (APO)

In the background check you should have listed the base overseas. He was living there for over 6 months so a check for that country should have been included. I'm sure if they require one they'll ask for it.

That becomes a problem tho, since you are considered to be on American (USA) territory when on base. So if she lived on Base, she'd be cool I believe.

Won't hurt to apply for police records, but believe there will be nothing to be found.

Thanks Hal I never knew that! In that case he would be fine then. Although wouldn't you have to list the base overseas in your address list not the US base address?

A USAF base (Or NAVY/ARMY/MARINES etc) has a US postalcode, and american address. (APO I believe). So no difficulty should come from this. So very unlikely that anything would come from this, as you would not have foreign SSN (or equivalent).

Whereas for example I, went to the US for 2 years for school, one of the first things I had to do, was to get an SSN, and that as well as my fingerprints were required for the US portion, for my NORWAY portion, there was onlyu an SSN required.

Cheers

Awesome thanks for the clarification! Then Tiggi has nothing to worry about!

I have a similar question, my husband served a year overseas 3 years ago in Iraq, so just to be clear a record check from Iraq shouldn't be neccessary, correct? He lived on base/had an APO.

Just to jump in for a sec, my partner was in the British Military for 6 years and although the guide does not ask for it, the embassy requested a non conviction certificate as an additional document (different than a police cert). This has also happened to other members as well with clear discharge from the army. Haven't seen this personally out of Buffalo yet, however it could happen if the embassy cannot obtain all the information they require for the back ground check.

Wouldnt A conviction in the US military show up on an FBI record?

Well that is what you would think! But from what I understand it is when they cannot get everything required from a police cert. I think it has to do with what you did in the military ie: combat etc. I have heard from people (from the same embassy as ours) that were not in combat or weren't involved in some sort of surveillance that they were never asked for it.
