Question, your husband was here in 2011? If he was then yes he would have had to file a 2011 tax return. Most of these tax issues can be prevented by being proactive on filing on time and thoroughly reporting any changes. By that I mean faxing AND mailing back up letters, then further following up by phone to make triple sure they receive the info.

Yes. I thought maybe he wouldn't have to submit a tax return because he had no income for the portion of time he was in Canada, but obviously I was wrong. We filed his taxes about a month late, but I don't think there will be any delays or problems. I've had very good luck with them so far by simply mailing in documents with no follow-up.

yup, me as well, so far no issues.

I logged in again today, nothing has changed so I went ahead and e-mailed my MP. He's not very well known for helping specific people, so we'll see. I'll be calling in the AM again to see if they got it. If not, I'll definately be asking for a fax number or e-mail for them. :o

I keep logging on, and even with "help" from my MP's minion, still nothing is happening. I called CRA and they said that the computers were updated and it looks as though I might receive something in July, but she also said that I didn't submit my husband's 2010 world income /sigh. There is nothing updated on My Account when I log in. It still says that I owe WAY too much money and nothing else is calculated. I give up on dealing with this gov't. No accountability and no productivity. I almost miss the Liberals being in power.

I wish Jack Layton was still alive :'(

I got an e-mail from my MP. I have to go there to sign a consent form. Hopefully they will be able to figure it out! I didn't get a chance today to call, and too annoyed with outside factors to call right now so maybe MP will help!

Assuming they know how to do it...

I got an email from the minion this morning. They wanted me to do 2011 taxes for my husband and scan and email it back to him and he'd submit it to his contact at CRA. The minion sent me a temporary tax number for my husband to put on the tax forms. It's weird that they require a tax return for my husband. The law states that it's only required if he was here more than 180 days during the year. Oh well, I submitted it and he said once they get that, they'd send me a manual cheque for the total amount owed dated June 20th.

I got sponsorship approval today as well, it's nice to see some results after waiting :)

I'm worried about that because my husband did his online, and he cannot get any hard copies of 2010 at all. Gah!

I don't know why it took them so long to change your marital status ? I sponsored my husband from out land and I just called CRA and let them know I am married. They send me a form in mail I filled and signed mailed them back. Later they said I have to give them 2010 tax return assessment for my Husband even though I was married on 2011. I got it from my husband and send it, after that everything was fine.

I'm wondering how they will react when I tell them he cannot get a hard copy of 2010... yikes

I actually did do that, we estimated how much he made. But nothing changed :(

I have a question too.

I am Canadian Citizen, seperated in 2007 and divorced on September 2008 in Canada. I left Canada on July 2007 and started a new relationship in another country. Since then my partner and I have been together and living outside of Canada. She is my common-in-law partner. We're staying at the same apartment. I am working and she's not. Each year I declared my overseas income to Canada and paid taxes. I have property in Canada and I can't be a non-resident.

After I am divorced in Canada I changed my marital status on CRA's My Account from seperated to divorced. My account still shows that my status in Canada is "Divorced". The reason I didn't change it to common-in-law because the country we currently live doesn't accept common-in-law. They accept only marriage and divorce. Common-in-law means engagement for them.

Now I am sponsoring my partner to Canada. My job contract is finishing at the end of 2012, we're getting married in abroad in October and in 2013 I am thinking to go back to Canada with her after our case's approval. If CIC agents check my tax documents they see that my status is divorced.

Will this become a problem on my sponsorship approval? If yes, what should I do? I was thinking to change my status right after our marriage in October. I need your opinions about this matter. Thank you!
