Hi guys, hopefully somebody can help me regarding with CRA issue. I got a letter asking for my WORLD INCOME for the 1st year I came here in Canada. ! did not work for that year back home. Wondering now, if what I am going to do!? Is it possible to write them ( CRA ) a letter saying that I have zero world income for the year I 1st came here in Canada. Or there's a way that I can prove to them that I have zero world income for the 1st year I came here. Thanks

I would send them a letter stating what you just told us.

Thank you for the reply:)

I didnt lose any credits. We got married in August '11. My husband has always been a visitor, never worked, etc. Our tax office got me to fill out an Individual Tax Number form for him, which I submitted with the rest of the forms for income tax. No issues, at all.

Unsure if the fact that my name had been legally changed to his, and I had changed my status to married through them months before doing income taxes.

i filed my tax return this year claiming my hussy, then got a letter last weekn indicating i owe to from GST/HST as a result of change in status....unless i was able to explain otherwise in form of written letter, which i did, explaining im sponsoring him, he has no money, and no SIN#, period.

so i hope now my things will not be affected moving forward, until he is actually legally entitled to work

anada- you need to officially declare his world income for 3 yrs prior even if you were NOT married at the time...so for example- 2011,2010 and 2009...you can put Zero as the net income but thats what they are going to need. Write another letter and fax it with your signature and sin#. State he is a non resident who has never entered canada (if he hasnt). It will be fine, ignore the letters to pay back, they will recalculate.

Why? Do u live in newfoundland? Make sure u are sending to the right tax office.

Yes...believe it or not I am having the same issue with CTBC. Got married in Oct of 2011 and never even once thought about it and then I did not get my March credit so I called and they said because my income tax return showed I was married...etc. So got the forms filled and out and sent them in. Called in April yes they had my forms and I would be re-instated in May with 3 months owing to me.....called again in May just to confirm because after dealing with the government you learn two different people = two different answers....so I called 2nd week of May yes all was good $$ to be sent to my account...well May 18th came and went no $$$$...called after the long week and was told that my exact date of marriage was not listed....they had October of 2011 and that is it.....well to say I was upset was and understatement but I remained calm and said I had called twice before and both people said we were good to go all info received.....so he said to me now all info is received so I said so in June I will get my $$$ and he said "oh no, the cut of date for June was May 16th" so he said July. Unbelievable.......seriously if the majority of us were this incompetent in our daily jobs we would not be working.......so thank you for the vent and I can't believe they are messing up with sooo many people. >:(

No, near Kingston, Ontario. And yep that was the right one.

Just a little update. They clued in and it's now down to 93 dollars. Called my accountant and he explained it to me. CRA bases everything on the previous year. So if your husband made 10K in 2010, they expect him to make the SAME in 2011 and give him/you a certain amount with GST/HST and OTB.

So I'll just give what our situation is. My husband made about 8k in the first five months of 2011 (He came here in May of 2011 so he stopped working then obviously). So they asked for 2010 as well, he put the same, 8k because he had no idea. So they assume that he made 8k in a YEAR instead of just the 5 months. They also assume that I am making the same amount as I did last year. Which I'm not since I haven't been working since Feb.

Basically, a whole lotta ASSUMING going on. It's stupid really. You'd think they can look at your SIN and be like "Oh she hasn't worked in such and such amount of time, we'll adjust" But no, they assume what I made last year will be the same as this year. *shakes head*

So when GST comes out, in July, I will only get 6 bucks and my "debt" to the Harper Government(since that's what he wants it to be called....) is repaid. Frigging pissed me off when they tell me I owed them. I'm sorry, I owe you nothing because you screw over so many other people, I pay my taxes, I file income taxes so leave me alone! LOL. I would definitely try to find an accountant and see if they can figure it out, ours I've had since I was 18 and he's my parents accountant too so he knows me and the situation. And all this reminds me why I failed accounting in college ???
