My docs said it's NOT arthritis, it's from the foot healing. I say bull! But I might ask about these. GRR.
The cortisone injection will obviously have to be given by a doctor, but the glucosamine and chondroitin you can find in any Walmart or Costco pharmacy. They're pretty inexpensive (about $15 or $20 for like 250-500 pills/capsules). You don't need a prescription for them...so if you want to see if they help, I'd suggest you start off with the following schedule:
Weeks 1 and 2: take exactly as recommended on the bottle
Weeks 3 and 4: continue with the normal dose
Weeks 5 and 6: take double the dose
Weeks 7 and 8: continue with double dose
Weeks 9 and 10: stay on the double dose
Weeks 11 and 12: back to single dose
So after 12 full weeks (three months) of being on it, if you notice that it's helping, continue with the single dose and stay on it.
After you're back on single dose, if you feel that it was helping but the effects are starting to wear off, repeat the above schedule for three more months, then back to single dose again.
If you don't notice any improvement - at all - after six months of being on it, then I would say it's probably not going to help you. However, it wouldn't hurt to stay on the single dose to prevent (or at least ease) any future flareups. But that's up to you and your doctor.
Glucosamine and chondroitin have been shown to be completely safe for the vast majority of people. If, on the rare chance that you find yourself experiencing some side effects, they're probably going to be mild and will go away after some time.
Please note: If you have high blood pressure, or ANY sort of heart problems/palpitations, or are diabetic, don't do ANYTHING that I mentioned until you first talk about it with your doctor. Same goes if you're already on some kind of prescription medications - especially blood thinners or anticoagulants.
