By the way, just for people's reference here... My total step 1 took 70 days. From when they received it to when I was officially approved as the sponsor. Not 55 days...

They should put something closer to 70 days, as a processing time, so people can have more realistic expectations

I agree they should change it. They seem to be going two or more weeks without REALLY updating so we will see what happens on Wednesday.

I have a question

At the moment, my husband and I are both in East Asia and the plan was to wait out the application process from here. However, I am getting really homesick, and I am wondering if it is possible for us to go to Canada before he gets his PR.

As you may have seen, I have already been approved as the sponsor (as of March 20th), and now our file is in transit to Buffalo-- but according to CIC processing times, it COULD be another 11 months. He is American, so he's visa exempt. I am just wondering if he can go to Canada for the last few months of the process without it affecting his approval?

Does anyone know if this is possible or have experience with this?

Yes that is possible. I know several people on the forum have done that. He just has to prove that he will leave. But he will have a much easier time getting in because he is a US citizen. Show proof of sponsorship approval, proof of money to support him, his ties to his home country etc.

Thanks for the quick reply. I don't know if you would know this... but what if he doesn't have any ties? Like he actually hasn't lived in the US for several years, and if we left Asia, it would entail quitting his job, so he couldn't really show proof that he would move back here I don't think.

Well that makes it trickier if they ask him more questions at the border because if he has no ties they won't believe he will leave when his visa expires. But it does help that you are already approved as a sponsor. I think some more experienced members need to give you some input. I would say it would be very risky for him to quit his job unless you guys don't need the income. I know Americans have it easier and some just say they are visiting, don't mention the PR application or anything.

I know that Americans can apply for a temporary resident visa at the border.

We tried getting one but my husband is Mexican but has no ties to Mexico. The immigration officer was very nice and called us to get more info and recommended we withdraw our application so we didn't have a denial on our record. And if he approved, my husband could get turned away at the border and stuck in Mexico where he hasn't been since he was a child. So it was very risky for us.

I hope you can get more input. Might want to start a new thread.
