Finally found an inland 2013 8)

Hi everybody, first of all I would like to thank everybody in this forum that takes time to help the others, you guys saved me $3500 on an immigration lawyer.
My wife is sponsoring me, we sent our package by courier on March 10TH, arrived there on the 11TH.
I received what I now know (thanks to you again)it is AOR on March 20TH, by Email, with that Email came as well the request to provide more information on my background declaration as I forgot to include the periods and addresses I was unemployed back in Portugal.
I submitted my OWP with the application and my medicals were done Jan 07TH.
My wife also received an Email on March 22ND about her sponsor request and giving her a file number, I got an UCI number.
If someone could be so kind to add me to the spreadsheet I would be really thankfull.
Good luck all

Welcome ArtSnow to the group of patient people. You did save lots of money, you don't need a lawyer, the people on here are very helpful and lots of knowledge.

So our rent just went up and it kind of gave me a bit of a wake up call; I need a new job. Problem is that they're supposedly processing my Sponsorship app now. If I change jobs, does that mess everything up while they're processing the application? If so, I think I can stay at the job for a bit longer as my husband is the main breadwinner of the couple.... Any advice?

You can definitely change jobs. Spousal sponsorship isn't income dependant and your husband is working too. You can notify CIC, but they probably won't care too much unless you take up drug running. :p

When you sent your inland application, did you also include an application for an open work permit or for an extension of your visitor status? If not, you are out of status. The PR application by itself does not establish your status in Canada.

Domestic flights do not check your immigration status.

Generally you receive an acknowledgement of receipt (AOR) a few months after submitting the package. By now the Call Centre should have a record of you if you wish to call them (they can also provide your UCI once it's been issued so you can watch e-CAS give you mis-information.)
Hello! Thank you for the reply! I just found out (after two months) that my common-law had actually received the AOR a month after we sent the papers. They are also processing the papers! Hahaha He totally forgot to check he's e-mail (it's a new one and he's not used to checking it). I guess he expected or letter or something (talk about old school, hahaha). We are so happy though! And yes, I did send an OPW. So as of January 23rd I am what they call an "implied" visitor! Now, more waiting. Fingers crossed! Good luck to you all! ;)

hello everyone.. I need urgent help.. I'm not sure what I should do now...

I've got an AOR April 20th.. my husband is my sponsor, unfortunately he got fired by his company April 30. On our application, it said he's currently employed.. should I email CIC with this change? would this affect the application for spousal sponsorship??

He's applied for a few jobs already just waiting for calls for interviews. On another note.. if he goes on EI, would this be consider "government assistant"?

Thanks in advance!

Change of employment is not one of the things you have to notify CIC of, and EI benefits are not social assistance. He will be fine to collect EI while he searches for a new job.

Are you the Sponsor or the person being sponsored ? If you are the Sponsor - you can change jobs without any need to notify CIC but if you are the person being sponsored it would be depend on your work permit. If it is "open" then you are a free agent as long as it is valid but if it was issued for a specific employer then you are obligated to follow those restrictions.

Just an update ... (not as exciting as last Mondays tho ;) )
On Friday, we got an email from CIC that says my husbands OWP has been approved. It is dated May 2nd, 2013 and says the permit is valid until May 2-2014. It also has the permit number on it as well and says he will be issued it upon his arrival in Canada (he's already here). We have not rec'd the AIP letter in the mail yet tho.. likely another week for that to come.. and I imagine the actual permit itself will be enclosed.

Hi all,

Great thread! Hopefully, someone can help me. I applied inland (my wife’s Canadian) when I had a TN1 (NAFTA) temporary work permit, so I didn’t attach an OWP application like many of you. I was recently fired and I want to look for a new job, but my work permit was issued specifically for one company. Should I apply for an OWP now or wait until I get AIP? Also, do I need to inform the CIC or will it slow down/negatively impact the process? Your input is greatly appreciated!

My timeline:

App. Received: Jan. 25, 2013
AOR: Feb. 14, 2013
Processing: Feb. 13, 2013
MICC & Undertaking: Feb. 27, 2013
CSQ App Received: March 1, 2013
CSQ Issued: April 2, 2013
CSQ Received: April 4, 2013

Wolanila…Can you please add me to the spreadsheet? Thanks!

TN1 is the US term for a NAFTA work visa, not the Canadian term (they just call them NAFTA work permits in Canada, no special designation).

First, note that even though you had a closed work permit, you are eligible to collect EI. Sometimes they refuse such claims, but the case law on this point is clear - you pay EI, you are eligible to collect EI benefits.

Given that your application is not likely to be processed until June, I'd suggest that you complete an OWP application now and send it to CPC-V and ask them to add it to your file, for processing when AIP is granted. That also means you are covered by implied status until they make a decision (assuming you are in status now.)

Finally, you also have the option of looking for other qualified work. As long as it meets NAFTA requirements, you can get a new NAFTA work permit - technically, you can get it at the border, but given that you have applied inland you might not wish to take the very small (but not zero) risk that a border officer might refuse to allow you back into Canada (suggesting that if you do wish to flag pole, it's best to do that at the St. Pierre and Miquelon border - the US can't refuse you but a French territory can!)

You don't need to advise CIC of your change in employment situation - you're not applying in a category that requires you be employed.

Thanks computergeek! Do you (or anyone else happen) to have the link to the OWP application? Also I read somewhere that you can apply online and it's faster. Is that an option? Sorry for all the questions, but it's a little confusing. Thanks again!

If you are sending in a new application for a work permit, it is faster to send it in online. If you wait until you have AIP to submit it then it would be faster to apply online. But if you send in a paper OWP application now and have it attached to your file, they will issue the OWP at the time AIP is granted - which is faster than waiting until AIP is granted.

http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/information/applications/extend-worker.asp

It's a generic form, so write N/A in areas that don't apply - like the employer's name.
