I read a similar article in the Metro but someone posted it on another thread so I'm also posting that same link here. I thought it was interesting and would be of interest to people here.

OTTAWA - The Harper government has quietly proposed that people coming to Canada to join their partner must stay in the relationship for two years or more before being formally granted permanent residence.

...The newcomer would then have to remain in a bona fide relationship with their sponsor for two years or more following arrival — or risk having their permanent residence status revoked. In turn, this could lead to their removal from Canada.

I think it's a great idea and they should grant this "Conditional Permanent Residence" right away. In a month or so and still have two yrs to do the backgroudn check or whatever they do

I couldn't agree more. This will make our lives much easier. This way they would have enough time to do ensure that the marriage is real and not a scam. I hate those people who comitted frauds and scams and brought people over from Pakistan and other countries. They gave us a bad name and rep, for monetary gains. The money they received for these scams is haram and they would just never be happy in their lives.

Exactly! But considering this is coming from the Conservatives, I wouldn't trust them much. If they made us go through 2 years of this distance between our spouses with the 2 extra years, I'd have a fit!

If we get to bring our spouse back with us after marriage and properly get to spend time with them and like you said to ensure the marriage is real even for ourselves and not just the government. I mean a few people I know have gotten married in another country and later realize their spouse had other intentions once they got here and things didn't end well and I find that heart breaking.

But its unfair to treat all of us as if we're all the same. Our new government should set up a better and efficient system and not just talk about it.
