Thanks, I had a big argument with the woman at Shoppers myself. Showed her the actual CIC link, and even then she was saying that she's only done 35x45mm photos for citizenship applications, and made me doubt myself.

The CIC site says 50x70mm: http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/information/applications/photospecs-cit.asp. However the Shoppers Drug Mart I went to said they typically do 35x45mm (as is also mentioned in other sites) for citizenship applications. Which one is it?

I remember having to provide my birth certificate for my PR (or PNP) application a few years back, and had to get it translated and notarized. That was a painful process that took more than 2 weeks. Would I need to provide this information again? I understand the new list of required documents...

Yes, this might be the way to go. Get the citizenship+passport, then worry about the name change, instead of doing it pre-citizenship, which might complicate the citizenship application itself.
