    Have you received your results? If yes, then technically they can refuse you. If you haven't, then you are still a student. Take a letter from your university stating that you are student in the university and your results aren't out.

    You were lucky in that case..If you didn't declare more than $10K, then they will confiscate the money and ask you to provide with appropriate documentation. They lead charge ranging between $250 - $1500+ depending upon the discretion (and legal confrontation) of the CBSA officials.
