I read several news online in couple of different websites of immigration companies, that the Canadian Gov is extending working permit (PGWP) for graduate level students:as long as you obtain a Master's degree in Canada, no matter if it's 1-year or 2-year(must be longer than 8-month though), you can all get a 3-year PGWP without any other condition (no job offers or whatsoever). This is very different from what i heard before, it was said to be 1-year master, 1-year PGWP. So i want to ask if anyone knows this is TRUE? ::) MANY THANKS!

Hi Pmm, sorry Reha for hijacking your thread.

I have a question, I am an International Student with Study Permit. How can i bring a Family member (Parent) to Canada so that he/she can sponser for my studies while working.

Is that possible. If so what are the requirments etc.

You can't... As a student, you have no ability to "bring" a parent to Canada. If they came as a visitor, they cannot work.

No..Your info is incorrect. If you complete your masters in 1 year and provide a letter from your university stating that the official duration of your master's degree was 2 or more years, then you will get 3 years of PGWP. You will have to attach this letter while you are applying for your PGWP...and how do I know it? A recent Master's graduate who complete master's degree in 1.5 years and got 3 years of PGWP. Now, if you don't provide this letter, then you will get it for how long you studied..say if you completed in 1 yr, without this letter you will get PGWP for 1 year..so, remember to provide this letter.

As Zardoz said, you can't bring your parent here..but if your parent come here as a visitor and there is some employer who agrees to provide LMO for your parent, then he/she can apply for a closed work permit, and if that's approved, he can stay with you in Canada...Now, that's really tough in Canada....

You are completely wrong.

You just answered the question. Basically he completed his 2 years course in 1.5 years, so the course was actually 2 years. But here his/her course is 1 year program

Listen...I'm not wrong. a course whose offcicial duration is 2 yrs or more is eligible for 3 yrs of PGWP..

see here: http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/study/work-postgrad-who.asp

A Post-Graduation Work Permit cannot be valid longer than the official length of your program of study in Canada. For example, students graduating from a four-year degree program might be eligible for a three-year year work permit. Students graduating from an eight-month certificate program would only be eligible for a work permit of eight months.

If the official length of your program of study is:

less than eight months
you are not eligible for this program
less than two years but more than eight months
you may get a work permit for a period no longer than the length of your program of study (for example, if you studied for nine months, a work permit may be issued for a period of nine months)
two years or more
a work permit may be issued for three years

I completed mine in 1.5 yrs and got 3 yrs of PGWP coz it was my Master's degree and official duration was 2 yrs or more...

Here Rhea is talking about her Master's degree...which she is asking if she completes in 1 yr..all master's degree are officially for 2 yrs but a student can complete it early by taking more credits....

Just a correction S.gupta

All master's degree are NOT 2 years - My friends are doing Meng - One year course...and also some Masters courses in other fields - Most universities have 2 year programs but some faculties also offer one year programs.

So if the OP has completed a course with official duration of 1 year - PGWP will be one year.

If the OP has completed a 2 year course in 1 year - PGWP will be of 3 years.

S.gupta... Rhea13 didn't mention that she is going to complete here 2 year course in 1 year though. So finally, 1 year program = 1 year PGWP, 2 year Program = 3 year PGWP

By the way, Nice blog posted http://www.shrutispointofview.blogspot.ca/

Going over the contents of Rhea's initial post, I would agree with Kiran. Ultimately, only Rhea can clarify what exactly she wanted to know! ;D
