    First Time Tax filing

Just to note NETFILE is only available after one has actually filed a paper return. OTOH, since this person never stated they have income in Canada, only mentioned the US, I'd suggest filing with the IRS.

How do you deal with the wait?

Wish I had taken the advice to learn another language. Join a social community (even if online), do fun things to take your mind off this. That's about all I can think of.

    Congrats!

    US outland applicants' thread :)

Only needs to be done for people being sponsored, i..e applicant(s). Citizens do not need to be sponsored (i.e. PPR is not for those two) so they don't care about their eye colour, and/or likely know already. Should be in the mail/email you were sent.

    US outland applicants' thread :)

You got much nicer people. I had to specifically provide utility bills that had my name and an Ontario address on it. Since they were not in my name, as I moved in with my wife, instead I had to opt for a signed bank statement with bank letterhead which showed my detailed information. Was quite...

    Good luck, friend.

    US outland applicants' thread :)

For OHIP even after you land you still have to wait 3-6 months to be eligible, and even then they are quite anal about the evidence provided to prove provincial residence. At least I know I'll have less hoops to jump through if we do move to Alberta.

You will physically have the COPR and passport from the mail, that's your signal to land. COPR is your main documents for first entry as PR. If the American has their passport and COPR they can leave Canada to get their stuff, as they need the passport for travel anyways (in fact they...

    US outland applicants' thread :)

I don't know if the COPR's from Ottawa are the same as since they changed locations from Buffalo, but it should be a large distinct paper potentially combined with counterfoil on the US passport, if they still do things the same way. You will know you have it because it will be mailed to the...

    Backlog reduced 40%

I'll await the 2013 data next year before I come to any conclusions -- CIC is known for it's PR. We may sponsor my mother in a few years down the road, so any improvements would be welcomed.

Does Canada call relatives of the person being sponsored?

I don't see why they couldn't, immigration is a serious matter (which is why you and your sponsor are subject to criminal backgrounds and the burden of proof surrounding how bona fide the relationship is), and if you gave them the info, or if they obtained it legally, it's certainly within the...

    US outland applicants' thread :)

Ignore the e-Cas message, once you get PPR you are in the "home stretch". I hope their processing of PPR's isn't so bad as to where you would expect COPR by May (are they worse now than the 2-3 weeks expected via mail before?), but this is where you should be relaxing a bit.

Why should we land in Calgary?

As much as I find Alberta not having PST a great thing (it's like the Oregon of Canada!), with the fiscal problems that province is having (this is a concern of ours as we plan on moving to Alberta eventually) and the potentially continuous oil revenues, speculatively, going to continue...

    US outland applicants' thread :)

Personally I don't see why they'd have a problem with it on goods to follow, the problem might be if they think you're essentially staying with that car in Canada without going through proper procedures first -- they can be quite anal about doing things the right way. If you explain your...

    US outland applicants' thread :)

This should shed some light -- second post: http://www.canadavisa.com/canada-immigration-discussion-board/importing-vehicle-on-list-of-goods-to-follow-t27966.0.html If you're in doubt ask the CBSA yourself, when I had any questions about the border, I called the port of entry and talked to an...

3 places to move to, 1 big decision, help needed!

Oh I'm sure weather matters significantly, as someone who is used to a drier California climate, moving to Ontario and experiencing their mildly humid summers (I've experienced summer in Georgia and Florida so I know it does get worse), it's quite more bearable in Calgary where the climate is...

Social life in Canada vs USA

    USD Banking

Weird, with TD I make transfers with an Android app and it takes less than a minute. Is there any major bank that doesn't charge ridiculous fees just to have a checking account? Or have these ridiculous transaction limits without also paying ridiculous fees? I guess I was spoiled by Wamu/Chase...

3 places to move to, 1 big decision, help needed!

If you don't mind the drive (surely driving up the QEW and 403 are a hassle as are driving on any 400 series freeway in the GTA during commute time) Burlington is good, and it's between Toronto and Hamilton. The weather is okay, but as someone who came from California, I prefer the dry air of...

Burlington is a great town, but if I was in your shoes and had the choice between Calgary and Burlington, I'd pick whichever gets me a (better) job
