Canada immigration and citizenship guide for Facebook and mobile application

Canada, 7th March: Jason Kenney, Canadian immigration minister has launched an educational and a fun Facebook and mobile application in a bid to attract new audiences.

The application takes tour of the ‘Discover Canada: The Rights and Responsibilities of Citizenship’, the Canada immigration guide, and checks your knowledge regarding values, history, symbols and political institutes of Canada.

Learn through fun-Helpful for new immigrants to know facts about Canada--

This new online fun and educational tool was launched by Kenney on 3rd March, 2011.

This will prove to be of great help for new immigrants wanting to learn basic facts about Canada.

The initiative by Canada immigration minister has been aptly named ‘How Canadian are you, EH!’ It comprises of 122 queries which can be taken time and again as long as you wish to on your Android, iPhone or your Blackberry.

Every time you play this application, you will be asked 20 questions selected at random from a total of 122 questions.

You need to select one answer out of different answers provided for each question in the quiz. Speaking about the application, minister Kenney said that the application can be downloaded for taking the quiz and it can also be shared with your friends.

It’s a way to find how Canadian any person living in Canada is, added Kenney. Basically, this new tool is targeted to provide basic facts about Canada’s past and its politics to students currently enrolled between grade five till grade 12, yet, it is beneficial for many.

Everyone can gain from CIC guide--

It’s not just for newcomers in Canada, even if you are an immigrant living in Canada for quite some time but don’t have thorough knowledge about your new nation, then this new online tool is appropriate for you as well.

The application draws its material from ‘Discover Canada: The Rights and Responsibilities of Citizenship’, the Canada citizenship study guide.

Its part of the ongoing initiative named “A Fun Path to Learning”, an online tool launched by Canada immigration department-CIC (Citizenship and Immigration Canada) way back in April last year. It can be found easily within Facebook, in Android marketplace, in Blackberry app and even at the app store of iTunes.

Canada immigration must allow access to more foreign workers-CCA

Canada, 8th March: The restriction on number of skilled immigrant workers to be allowed into Canada this year is being criticized by the Canadian Construction Association.

The CCA (Canadian Construction Association) says such a move by CIC(Citizenship and Immigration Canada) will lead to shortage of skilled workforce in the nation.

As per the latest official data obtained from the Canada immigration department-CIC, the nation will allow 55,900 skilled immigrants in the year 2011, reveals Richard Kurland, an immigration lawyer based in Vancouver.

And this is nearly 20 percent less than the number of immigrants allowed into Canada under the Federal Skilled Worker scheme in the year 2010.

Last year, the number of skilled immigrants allowed to come to Canada was said to be around 70,000.

Such reductions are terrible, reveals president of CCA, Michael Atkinson, adding that the Canada immigration department must work towards reforming the system.

No wonder, the CIC, taking a cue from the existing scenario, has already begun consultation from the public in order to introduce reforms in the Federal Skills Worker Program.

Atkinson stated that the CCA is hopeful that public consultations regarding the Canada Skilled Worker Program will result in making the program more favorable for the construction industry of Canada.

The present rules of the Federal Skilled Worker Program give higher preference to post-secondary qualifications and proficiency in either French or English.

And any aspiring immigrant wanting to move to Canada under the skilled worker category will find it quite difficult to get selected under the Federal Skilled Worker program if he fails to get high points in both these categories, Atkinson maintained.

No wonder, many skilled immigrant aspirants fail to get qualified under this program, asserted Atkinson. Meanwhile, the Canada immigration minister Jason Kenney has hinted that the program is set in for a couple of changes soon.

Changes likely to be introduced in the Federal Skilled Worker Program---

• Maximum points for high proficiency in either of the two official languages of Canada will most likely be raised from 16 to 20.

• Reducing the education years needed for getting points for either a trade or non-university credential. • Different language requirements for professionals/managers and trades-people.

Canada government cuts funding to Ontario immigration program

Canada, 8th March: The Canadian government has announced to cut funding to Ontario Youth Program that has been a huge success in settlement of new immigrants.

Named SWIS (Settlement Workers in Schools) program, the program for new immigrants coming in Ontario is a joint collaboration between the immigrant agencies and school boards.

It helps newcomer students getting adjusting to new life in Ontario and has also been instrumental in connecting the parents of the immigrant students with the community.

The concern among educators is that cutting the funding for this immigrant program will leave the immigrant youth at a great disadvantage and make them lag behind their Canadian counterparts.

The huge success of the immigrant initiative at Ontario led to opening up of similar immigration programs in other Canadian provinces too.

No wonder, the decision of federal cuts for the immigration youth program has come in for a great surprise to all. Ottawa has stated that the reason for such cuts in the funding for immigrant settlement programs is due to decrease in the number of immigrants coming to settle in Ontario.

However, according to Brian Woodland, director of communications and strategic partnerships for Peel District School Board, the demand for getting immigrant services at the three reception centers is witnessing a growing trend.

He said that immigrants have been making prior appointments to get immigrant services at their centers even before their arrival in Ontario.

Woodland said that the recently announced immigration funding cuts by Ontario will compel to shelve the plans for opening up of a new welcome center apart from the three already existing centers. Peel would lose nearly $1 million funding due to the cuts announced by Ontario, worried Woodland.

That’s not all. The board will also most likely lose around four members of its teaching faculty, almost all of the summer supply teaching staff and six people working as child-care workers at its centers.

As many as 4,400 immigrants have been helped by the reception centers of Peel since it began working nearly a year and a half. The immigrant students have been given assistance in a range of services including assessment of education, school registrations etc.

Top of PageCanada's Immigration Plan for 2011

The immigration levels plan for 2011 reflects Canada's long-term vision for immigration and recognizes the importance of immigration to Canada's economic growth and prosperity. In addition, the plan fulfils the objectives of the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act to reunite families and reflects Canada's increased international commitments and humanitarian obligations.

This year's plan indicates the number of skilled immigrants being selected (principal applicants) and the estimated number of spouses and dependants they would bring. Federal economic categories (Federal Skilled Worker, Business Class, Canadian Experience Class and Live-in Caregiver) have been combined to create greater flexibility for CIC's application processing network. This added flexibility will allow the network to shift resources from one category to another to respond to changing operational pressures. Additionally, because provinces and territories are increasingly involved with the selection of economic immigrants, this year's plan identifies economic immigrants according to the government responsible for their selection or nomination: the Government of Canada or provinces and territories.

The levels plan reflects growing commitments in the economic, social and humanitarian streams. In particular, the admissions range for federal economic immigration has been reduced to permit further growth in the Provincial Nominee Program. CIC has made progress to date on key commitments in the Federal Skilled Worker category, and is seeing modest growth in the Canadian Experience Class, which is expected to continue in 2011. In the Family Class, spouses, partners and children admissions are expected to return to historical levels in 2011 while admissions in the parents and grandparents category are expected to remain stable. The levels plan incorporates the first year of a three-year plan to increase the number of refugees settled in Canada, announced with the introduction of the Balanced Refugee Reform Act. Also, following recent appointments at the Immigration and Refugee Board, resulting in more cases being processed, the range for protected persons in-Canada and their dependants abroad has been increased. As a result, Canada's total planning range for the Protected Persons Class is higher than last year.

*This year admission projections for economic immigration are being presented based on selecting and/or nominating jurisdiction because the direct involvement of provinces and territories in economic immigration has grown. Under the Canada–Quebec Accord Relating to Immigration and Temporary Admission of Aliens, the Government of Quebec has responsibility for selecting immigrants destined to its province, and other jurisdictions participating in the Provincial Nominee Program have the responsibility to nominate foreign nationals for permanent resident status.

Government of Canada immigrant internship program wins Employer Excellence Award

Ottawa, March 9, 2011 — An internship program that gives newcomers valuable Canadian work experience has earned Citizenship and Immigration Canada an Employer Excellence Award.

“I congratulate all those involved in the Federal Internship for Newcomers program for their work, which was recently recognized by this award,” said Citizenship, Immigration and Multiculturalism Minister Jason Kenney. “For many immigrants a lack of Canadian work experience is a significant hurdle in finding employment. That’s why this program is so exciting. We offer eligible immigrants a chance to work in the federal government and gain valuable Canadian experience. Hopefully that can be a springboard to a successful career in their chosen fields.”

Since 2008, close to 130 skilled immigrants have been placed in federal departments in fields such as policy, research, project management, administration, translation, communication and science, based on their skills and the needs of hiring managers. To be eligible, interns must be permanent residents or Canadian citizens who have been in Canada for less than 10 years and possess a post-secondary degree.

Madut Majok, a graduate from the program in 2010, provided the following thoughts: “Through this opportunity I gained invaluable experience working with a very competent and dynamic policy group at CIC.”

“As a founding partner and a lead participating department, HRSDC is proud to be helping newcomers get Canadian work experience that maximizes their skills and talent,” said Diane Finley, Minister of Human Resources and Skills Development. “This program is an example of how we are enabling skilled immigrants to find fulfilling and rewarding work and to contribute to our country’s prosperity.”

Some 11 federal departments and agencies are now involved in the program, with 20 additional departments, agencies, and Crown corporations expressing interest for the September 2011 recruiting process. Next year, interns will be placed in jobs in the National Capital Region, as well as other regions beginning with Toronto and Vancouver, tapping into local immigrant talent in those locations. The program currently partners with World University Services Canada (WUSC) Student Refugee Program, and through Local Agencies Serving Immigrants (LASI) World Skills and Service intégration travail Outaouais (SITO) for referral of job ready candidates.

The award was given by the Employer Council of Champions, an organization made up of employers that have committed to enhancing the utilization of skilled immigrants in Ottawa. Members of the Council represent a wide variety of employers, ranging from small to large operations in both the private and public sectors. The Employer Excellence Awards highlights the important work of employers in improving the integration of immigrants’ talents in Ottawa’s labour market.

Removing cap on Canada immigration key for the nation

Canada, 10th March: Canadian province Nova Scotia does not have required number of immigrants and hence there is a need for removal of immigration cap, states Progress Conservative Jamie Baillie.

Speaking before a gathering in Ottawa, Baillie said that Nova Scotia is among several regions and provinces in Canada struggling with the problem of insufficient immigrants.

And not many people from foreign lands are choosing Nova Scotia for living and doing a business. Baillie says that he is not asking for any monetary help from the Federal government.

Rather, what he is seeking from the Canadian government is to lift the annual capping on Canada immigration.

Higher immigration levels are needed in Nova Scotia in order to enable the province with the problem of an aging population, Baillie added.

There will be two working Nova Scotians for each retiree by the year 2025 which is not economically sustainable, he asserted.

Hence, this Canadian province is urging Canadian government to lift the annual immigration cap for skilled immigrants coming to work in Nova Scotia under the PNP (Provincial Nominee Program).

While Nova Scotia is struggling with inadequate number of immigrants, Manitoba, on the other hand, has been smart enough to attract nearly 5,000 skilled immigrant workers under the PNP.

Meanwhile, it has been reiterated by the Canada immigration minister Jason Kenney that the nation will find it quite difficult to increase the limit of immigration for Nova Scotia.

As per the official spokesperson of immigration minister, Alykhan Velshi, it’s currently not possible to sacrifice other immigration categories. As a result, Nova Scotia might not realize its dream of inviting more immigrants under the PNP.

The issue of lack of adequate number of skilled immigrant workers in Canada is likely to pose a major obstacle in the way of economic prosperity of the nation in the coming years has been hinted several times by Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper.

And considering the low rate of population growth in Canada, it becomes evident that we do need large number of immigrants in the coming 20 years or so if we want to keep our nation growing at the same rate.
