visitor visa extension for my wife

A related question:

My wife's open work permit expires July 2nd, 2014. We will be submitting our spousal application (Outland) in the next couple of days. Since her work permit is expiring, would she need to change her status to visitor? She's from a country that does not need a VISA to visit Canada. Could she just stay here for 6 months after July 2nd, then go to the US border, then re-enter?

I dont think a work permit automatically turns into a visitor visa. She should apply for a visitor visa before the work visa expires.

My understanding is that yes she would need to apply to change the work permit to a visitor visa. But i'm not a lawyer so i could be wrong.
