Hi,

So my parents are in Canada on visitor visa and after 15 days their 6 months stay will be over however they have valid visitor visa till 2027. We had already booked returned air ticket for May 19 at the time of coming. However, when we see the situation in India. We are thinking it's not the best time to go back. So what can we do legally to extend the stay? Tia

So far there is no such situation in India that they have to postpone their returns. Extension will take time in processing and cant be done so fast

Apply to extend their stay as visitors and wait for IRCC's respond. They have maintain status as visitor until IRCC make a decision to approve the extension or not.
If it's not approved, then they will need to return home. Otherwise, they can stay till the extended period.

Would look to see if their tickets can be refunded or return date changed. The situation has calmed down quite a bit at the moment. If they do want to try and extend their stay I would suggest asking to extend for a more generic/vague reason. Trying to extend their visit due to instability in India or fear for their safety in India could raise red flags for future visits/visa applications. You don’t want to raise concerns that your parents may try to remain in Canada indefinitely . Wanting to spend more time visiting, enjoying the summer weather in Canada, etc. would be my suggestion for extension reasons.

Have heard people visitor visa being cancelled in backend after the visit who stayed beyond 6 months in Canada and can be a problem in future with different visa applications.

That is primarily for younger people who are of working age where there are concerns that they aren’t genuine visitors given the length of time they have spent “visiting” Canada.
