Great news! Maybe because they lost your application at first they then tried a little harder when you reapplied? Anyway, I'm happy for you! Maybe ours will be soon.

First in our Vienna topic :)

Congrats arunsgirl :)

Hey fellow Vienna applicants! Just to update this thread for info, we got our PPR via email August 25th :)
I still can't believe how fast it went..We were totally caught off guard thinking we have 6 more months left... I hope the rest of you hear good news soon!!! good luck !!!!

Wow! Congratulations. Record time. Hopefully ours will be soon. Hopefully. I don't know why my husband's background check is taking so long. He wasn't involved in the wars either.

Wow glak that was fast! That's the way it should be. Congrats :).

Cleo when did he served, what year? It makes a huge difference if one served during conflicts or after... One doesn't have to be involved personally in any war to be considered involved by the VO.
If one served or been mobilized as reserve at the time war took place, he is considered involved. Being a clerk, cook, or in active combat infantry it doesn't matter to the VO it will be written in his military records that he participated in a war... automatically B checks take more time...Unfortunately that's just the way it is...

Order GCMS notes and you will know. Someone on the forum said it could be delivered via email in pdf form so it won't take long for you to get them.

He did his military service from 1988-89. And then he took classes to become an airline mechanic. Then in 1991 he was stationed for one month in an airline hangar. They did nothing but play cards. The only reason he can think that it would take more time is that he can't remember the name of his first commanding unit. It was so long ago.

We ordered CAIPS a week or so ago. But you know, it's only been four months since they starting processing his application.

Are GCMS notes ordered the same way as CAIPS?

Hi Cleo,

In your case, them main question is if your husband has participation in war noted in his military booklet. Which might be that hangar in 1991. If he does his security check is a 'special case' and will take longer.

I think when you order CAIPS you actually get the GCMS notes, and their speed might depend on what format you ordered them in. Hope this he;
Hope this helps. :)

***Congratulations to newly landed happy people! A new chapter begins for you, wish you all the best!

Wow 88-89 that's 22 years ago... I'm not surprised he can't remember any details...
Conflicts in Balkans started in 1991. so that's probably the reason for longer checks. Also if he can't remember details they wanted from him, that might be the problem too. He is probably stuck in a queue for an interview in Vienna and waiting... just like me... If so it will be written in GCMS notes.

GCMS notes are new type of notes that should replace old CAIPS. When you order CAIPS you'll get GCMS. I don't know if forms for ordering changed these days...
Anyway, difference is that CAIPS are more code type forms and GCMS are in free form text much easier to understand. You'll get 20 some pages printout.

No, he does remember details but not the exact name of his first unit in 88. I think he has the number but not the name. He even found an old friend who remembered his commanding officer's name.

I don't think he's going to need an interview. As I said, it's only been 4 months and his history is not as complicated as some of the other members I have heard about. I have a feeling CAIPS will come this week.

Yeah, I remain optimistic. He's got nothing to hide, has done nothing wrong. Not even a parking ticket.

(I also know the MP in my riding...I will contact him if I need to)

Hi Everyone,
I'm well into this process, but avoided this forum for many, many months since i wasn't sure what made me more depressed: hearing cases of people waiting for years on end, or hearing cases (mostly from china or india!) who get their visas usually in matter of a couple of months.....
Saw this Vienna thread, and figured I can contribute....

To bring you up to speed:
(I'm Canadian citizen, husband Serbian citizen)
Going through an "Out of Canada" Application - both my husband and I are in Serbia at the moment as we couldn't be separated anymore....

Feb 16, 2010 - Application Rec'd CPC-Mississauga
March 10, 2010 - Decision Made, file transferred to Vienna
March 31, 2010 - Vienna starts working on my hubby's file. NEVER GOT ANY LETTERS FORM THEM - only found out the in process when i logged on to CIC.GC.CA to check
April 13, 2010 - Request for additional info: Hubby got request to fill out a form regarding his military service (Military table)
Sept 22, 2010 - Request for additional information: Certified English translation of your military booklet.
Dec 8, 2010 - Request for additional information - Original military booklet.
(I mean f**kers! they couldn't ask for everything in april and saved me 9 months of this s**t?!?!?!?!)

Since then nothing.... i called Vienna a few times and every time got different information even though every time i spoke to the same person (Her name is Hanna)! First time she told me that our file will take approximately 12-18 months. Then a few months later they told me that only my husband's portion will take approx 12-18 months. While today i found out that specifically the background check by CSIS will take approx 12-18 months, and received the information that they forwarded our case to CSIS in July, 2010 - meaning that we're in months 13. She said that everyone who was involved in the military ESPECIALLY during the crucial time of war in the ex-yugoslavia is a subject to verification in the background checks. That lasts 12-18 months.

Serdj977 advised me to ask for CAIPS notes, so I will be doing that this week. I only hope I can pay by VISA as (since i'm not in Canada) I cannot get a draft nor certified check... I can't exactly pop into TD Canada Trust.... Anyone has experience with paying for CAIPS via VISA?

Other than that, i have no idea what to do with myself but stress. Currently in talks with an attorney who guarantees me that she can finish all this for us "fairly quickly" and even though everyone on this site is advising me not to bother, man i'm desperate!

Oh and I have my MP involved, but they are totally and completely useless.... definitely will give them a piece of my mind when I get back to Canada with mu husband....
(ps. everyone working in my MP's office is your stereotypical immigrants :o!) - makes you think how long did they take them to get their visas!!!!?????!!!!!!! Fuuuuuuuuuuuuuu****k.

Glak1234: I'm here again! your application was done fast! as in really really fast just 2 months? The record breaking Ive heard from Vienna is 3 months. yours was faster. Congrats again. Hey, why you're only coming in November? need more time packing perhaps? anyway, glad yours is finally done. hope everybody else in this forum too...

Tam.1979: I understand your frustration. that's why when my appeal was allowed, I didn't wait for Vienna to ask for updated documents. but still recently they asked for new PCC because they open my file later in which the PCC I sent after my appeal was already expired and as per Serdj977, this is time sensitive in which he was right. I also asked for my MP's help via email but no respond so I didn't bother anymore. As long as there's some movement on my file. I'm good but when December comes then I still don't have my hubby here or (knock on wood) denied, I will probably bombard them with my anger & my MP too. in the meantime, I'm really hoping for you & all other applicants here who are waiting for a looooonnnnnng background checks to be done coz this is not easy at all, emotionally & financially.
