HI,
Very new to this forum. Great information provided.
Just received my extension for a visitor visa, i was on a IEC visa, but that expired. I was told it would be 6 months for a visitor visa, but it isn't, its only two months, We're in the process of finishing our Family class sponsor visa for PR, What would be my time frame? to finish my application? This will include my open work permit application as well.

thanks

if you are applying inland then the process is going to take at least 12 months. right now, it's significantly longer, however they are pushing for a within 12 month timeline. we won't know how likely that is until we start seeing people approved for inland in that timeframe.

when does your passport expire? if it expires soon, that can be the reason they didn't give you a longer extension (unless they specified another reason).

The OP is applying through Family Class.

@OP: Traditionally, the Outland (Family Class) was faster, and the processing times would vary based on the country of origin you were from, and the Visa Office (VO) that was responsible for that region. So if you are going to apply outland, what is your country of origin / VO? Also, there is no Work Permit for this application type.

As an aside, if you intend to stay in Canada, you need to request more time on that Visitor Visa (extend it again). If you want to be able to stay in Canada, and potentially work, you might want to consider inland (Spouse, Common-Law and Conjugal Partner in Canada Class). This has an Open Work Permit (OWP) that can be requested. This is generally granted for a 2 year period (or the length of the passport - 1 month; which ever is shorter).

did the approval specify why they only gave you 2 months when you requested 6? was the PR application mentioned in your extension application?

Family Class is the outland process. Spouse, Common-Law, and Conjugal Partner in Canada Class is inland. There is a check box on the forms, so just be prepared for that.

If you apply inland, and you submit the proper payment + the OWP package, then you will have implied visitor status until they complete the processing of the OWP -- that takes ~4mos. So, as long as that's delivered to CIC's mail room before the day your Visitor Visa ends, you'll be fine.

How long was your IEC? That may have a bearing on it.

In either case, just make sure that on the forms / check lists that you follow the "in Canada" class instructions. When you file, make sure you have a validated IMM1344, IMM0008, and have paid the correct fees:

Application:
PR application: $550 ($475 for the PR + $75 for the Sponsor application are now one line item)
Right of Permanent Residence Fee (RPRF) : $490 (can be deferred, but can also be paid up front)

Temporary Residency Status:
Work Permit: $155
Open Work Permit Holder Fee: $100

Make sure you submit the receipts for those with your application.

The forms I cited are important, because at a bare minimum, those forms constitute an application (they can ask for more later). The fees are also important because Fees + those forms = an application in existence. As long as there is an inland PR application in existence, and you are not out of status when you apply, and the correct fees were paid, they will issue an OWP. It's nearly automatic.

1 year shouldn't matter. My comment was more relating to that, some work permits can only be extended to a maximum of 4 years, for example. But it's unlikely that had anything to do with the 2 months of Visitor Visa. That's why I asked it's duration.

Have you officially changed your name? If so, you need to update your passport. If not, you should be using the name that's on your ID.

As for why you only received a 2 month extension to your visitor STATUS (New Zealanders do not need a visa) there could be a few reasons. It could be a mistake, it could be the officer renewing it was in a bad mood. What's the date they approved the status renewal? Another possibility is they renewed it early and it only got to you now.

If you apply outland, renew your status again. If you apply inland, make sure you submit the OWP application before your current status expires.

I think i would have to extend her visiting visa. I gone thru online process and it ask to provide financial support details. As she is in canada on trv and not working. As CIC already aware that i sponsored her. What documents i should provide to show financial support for her ? Can i provide my T4 and copy of sponsorship letter for her ? or it must have to be her ? Your support documents are fine.
