Britincanada,

We are in Ontario...are we PR applicants eligible for medical (OHIP) as soon as the sponsorship has been approved? If so that's awesome! How do I go about applying for OHIP if you can give me advice. It will be wonderful if I can receive some medical care without worrying about insurance. I do have an insurance (BCBS) but it's back in the States (we are still paying for it dearly very expensive...ugh).

You mean government coverage for medical? As soon as the sponsor has been approved the applicant is eligible medical..although it might depend on which province you live in..I know its like that with OHIP..

Apply for your OHIP card as soon as you land, you can do that, but they will not issue you a card until 3 months later.

From the OHIP website...

Eligibility

Ontario residents are eligible for provincially funded health coverage (OHIP). Generally, to be eligible for Ontario health coverage you must :

be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident or among one of the newcomer to Canada groups who are eligible for OHIP as set out in Ontario’s Health Insurance Act ; and
be physically present in Ontario for 153 days in any 12-month period; and

be physically present in Ontario for at least 153 days of the first 183 days immediately after establishing residency in the province; and

make your primary place of residence in Ontario.

OHIP coverage normally becomes effective three months after the date you establish residency in Ontario. The ministry strongly encourages new and returning residents to purchase private health insurance in case you become ill during the OHIP waiting period

Whether applying for a new or replacement health card, you must bring three original documents to prove citizenship/immigration status, residency in Ontario and identity. Here is the link for the list of acceptable documents:

Medical (OHIP) coverage is provided to Permanent Residents 3 months after they arrive. For Ontario, it's 3 months from the day you arrive at Ontario, NOT the day you apply. (So you can technically have landed for 2 months and apply and the OHIP coverage will take effect 1 month from that point.) However, just because a sponsor is approved, the case still has processing to go through until PR status is granted. It's only at that point that the 3 month wait begins.

Thanks so much for the link. I've have looked at the list of documents you should bring to prove immigration status. While my process of sponsorship (my husband is sponsor) is going within Canada (I've sent papers 2 months ago and didn't get approval even 1st stage) I have:
1. Proof of residency - rental agreement (where my husband who is a main tenant shows me as a wife in rental agreement);
2. Support of identity - Canadian Valid Drive License (where you can see my address in Canada);
3...Prove of Citizenship/OHIP eligible immigration status... That's the point. If I understand correctly while 1st stage (my husband is confirmed as a sponsor) is still not finished I CANNOT receive from Immigration Office the following papers:1.Written confirmation from Citizenship and Immigration Canada that you are eligible to apply for permanent residence in Canada? Or should I wait till the whole process will be finished?
Please clarify!
Thanks A LOT!!!

Please Read this Fact Sheet http://www.health.gov.on.ca/english/public/pub/ohip/eligibility.html

On April 1, 2009, changes were made to the OHIP eligibility rules under Regulation 552 of the Health Insurance Act. As a result of these changes, you may be eligible for the Ontario Health Insurance Plan (OHIP) if you are included under one of the following categories :

* you are a Canadian citizen, permanent resident or landed immigrant, or are registered as an Indian under the Indian Act;
* you have submitted an application for permanent residence in Canada, and Citizenship and Immigration Canada has confirmed that you meet the eligibility requirements to apply for permanent residence in Canada (please note: applicants for permanent residence are no longer required to provide confirmation of having satisfied the Immigration medical as a condition for OHIP coverage); THIS MEANS AN INLAND APPLICATION AND YOUR SPONSOR HAS BEEN APPROVED..as at this point you will be told that you `have been found to meet minimum requirements for completeness under the immigration act`which is what OHIP is asking for.. because your not allowed to leave Canada during processing of your PR application OHIP will grant you medical coverage

AND

* you make your primary place of residence in Ontario; and generally speaking,
* you are in Ontario for at least 153 days of the first 183 days immediately following the date you establish residence in Ontario (you cannot be absent for more than 30 days during the first 6 months of residence); and
* you are in Ontario for at least 153 days in any 12-month period.

Its ONLY OUTLAND applicants that can`t get OHIP coverage until 3 months after they have officially LANDED in Canada and been told at the POE or at a landing interview that they are officially a PR!!

Does your status on ECaS say "Unavailable"? I think that's what makes me uneasy. I want it to be available! :'(

Sorry I was referring to Applicants applying Inland through Vegreville.
