They want to feel comfortable..that's fine. And they want to completely understand and give each other advice.. also fine with me. They will have to speak English soon anyways...scos said:Yeah, I noticed that. One would think that using English would not only be good from the standpoint of practice for when they arrive in Canada, but also that the chances of getting an answer to any question will increase dramatically since almost everyone here speaks English.
I have worked at a number of places where you get people who like to group up and speak in their native language. They usually become friends, hang together in the office, speak their language unless they have to talk to someone else for work, eat lunch together etc. It sounds nice and if they want to do it why not? Well, here's why not. Usually these are the people that never get noticed and never get promotions. It is because they are completely off the radar of everyone else at the company.
So when many of you arrive you should try to expand your contacts and speak the language. Finding only others like yourselves and speaking your own language unless absolutely necessary is not a route for success.
Just some friendly advice. Take it or leave it as you like.

At work we had a rule. English only in public places. It's so that people don't appear rude in front of their co-workers or customers. I long gave up getting frustrated trying to read this thread.. not being able to ask questions or follow along. If we're not Filipinos at least we're married to one. Obviously we are invested enough to know and love the culture. Even if I did the nice thing and learned the language of my partner I couldn't understand this thread. Would Ilokano or Bisayan help me here? ??? It would be nice if we could all talk together.
