Hi there! I am kind of in the same boat, except we have already submitted our application. I posted the same question here a few months ago. I decided to just wait to change my name after we get COPR. My passport expires in 2019 so I should have (fingers crossed) my COPR by then. When I get a new passport, I will then change my name on both Passport and COPR. There's a fee to get a new COPR which isn't that big as well. We were more than willing to pay that amount than wait months before we could submit the application. Just giving my situation as an example.Married on 1.4.18 - looking to send in paperwork next week. Wondering about name changes. I know I should apply with whatever name is on my passport but what happens when I receive my COPR? I know those names need to match. Do I change my name and apply for new passport with married name? Do I do that from my home country (USA)? Im already living in Canada - how are you supposed to do that when you cant leave the country?
In your case, weigh out how long a new passport would take and if you're willing to delay sending that application for a bit until you get your new passport. I'm pretty sure you can renew your US passport here in Canada, maybe contact the closest embassy to you and I'm sure they can clarify that. I'm a Philippine national and I am able to renew my passport through the Philippine embassy here in Canada.
