We are facing that dilemma right now. To ship or not to ship.
I guess it depends on how expensive the furn. is. Most of ours was from gmarket and from my dumpster diving days :)

Does Korea Post ship stuff bigger than the standard boxes on display? I gotta check that and see how much it costs.

We sent some boxes already, just stuff we don't need right now, depends if you send it by air or surface. Can cost between 50,000 ~ 150,000 won, just make sure the boxes aren't over 20 kg.

We mailed 10 boxes on August 5. Most of them were clothes and some small household things, plus we bought a few souvenirs, like hanji lamps, to decorate the new place. We used the number 5 boxes and we weighed each box so it was under 20 kg (some were exactly 20 kg). It cost about 54,000 won per box. On the customs declaration on each box I wrote "Personal Effects - Used Clothing/Books/Shoes - Not For Resale". The post office said it would take up to 12 weeks by boat. We were given tracking numbers that we could use after one month to track the boxes. We arrived in Canada on August 26 and our boxes all showed up last week, which is nice since the weather is starting to get chilly, especially at night.

Hi everyone,

My wife is planning to do the medical exam soon and we were wondering if she needs to bring anything. I have read in this thread that she will need to bring 5 passport photos, but does she need anything else? Also, how much did you pay for the exam? One poster mentioned that he had to pay extra to courier the results to Manila. Is this standard? Thank you for any input!

There are details on this in the earlier postings.

Ha! Exactly the same as our furniture! We gave most of the stuff to her younger brother to help him with his new apartment.

As for Korea Post, you can pretty much ship any size box with them as long as it's within the weight limits. We sent many boxes of personal effects ahead of us so that my wife would have her winter clothes as well as essential household items. Most of the containers were old lamyun boxes from Mega Mart which were quite large (not sure if they are bigger than a #5 Korea Post box, though). The only thing that we had to break up was a set of poles used to create an adjustable clothing rack. We sent them surface, and although they told us it could take 2-3 months, we were pleasantly surprised when they showed up in Canada 5 weeks later.

We found this shipping method to be much more affordable than using a shipping company. If one were not shipping furniture and was only shipping personal effects, I would highly recommend shipping though Korea Post.

In good news, we've since received sponsorship approval and have been notified that our application was forwarded to Manila!

How did you guys get that sidebar under your name that notes your time lines? I want some spiffy flair! Do you have to make a certain number of posts?

Thanks for sharing your shipping stories! Good to know it was useful. Lots of fun last week selling off/donating/trashing all but our essential stuff. Gonna downsize one more time before we move until we have max. 10 #5 K Post boxes.

I guess 10 20 kg boxes would be approx. $500? Much less than paying a company.

Can anyone help me with a dumb question of two?

I sent my sponsorship application and my wife's permanent residence application to the Vergreville centre because and the time I had read that inside Canada had a processing time of 11 months start to finish (one month shorter than Manila).

My complete package was received on July 8th and they finally started processing my sponsorship application on July 31st.

As I have read on here and on the CIC website, it should take on average 27 days to process your sponsorship.

http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/information/times/perm-fc.asp

I've also read that if your case is not processed in that time you can call.

So I did and was told that I would not be informed of my sponsorship status for 11 months if done in Canada and that this 30 day time is only for outside Canada applications. I simply don't get this. The average time for processing both sponsorship and residency in Canada in Ottawa is 14 months total and at the time I sent it to the Vegreville office it was only 11 months.

Now for the life of me I cannot find any site saying that the Vegreville office will not inform me of my sponsorship status, nor can I find the page that the lady on the phone was referring to. I did not take screen shots of the 11 month posting so I don't know for which office it was referring to specifically, nor was I aware that there were so many offices, or that they may have different processing times or even potentially different processes.

I was also told by the women on the phone that I should send a letter to Vegreville asking for my application back as it will get done faster outside the country...yet I still cannot find proof of this on there bloody site.

This is driving me nuts. My wife is going to give birth in January and I keep getting different information. We need medical coverage and I need to be able to show that my sponsorship has been accepted. It's been over 2 months now.

What exactly has happened to others here? Anyone go the in Canada route like me so that the wife could work and get medical?

I have a question about the Korean criminal check. My wife showed me the criminal check she obtained from the police station and the official square seal was printed instead of stamped with ink on the document. Was this the case for your wives' criminal check? I ask because all the other documents she obtained from the district office have a seal that was stamped with red ink. I know I might sound a little paranoid but I just don't want any delays in the the processing of the application. Thanks.
