Hello all,

So heres our situation. I am born and raised in canada. I sponsored my husband from tunisia since 2012. He will be here for 4 years this december 2016. I am wondering if we are able to sponsor his brother who is about 27 years old. My husbands mom is still alive. Ive been reading online but its not so clear to be. Are we able to sponsor his brother at all? He is a single man by the way. Thank you!

no, neither your husband nor you can sponsor his brother. in order for your husband to do so, he would need to be considered "alone in canada" (meaning not married, and have no kids or relatives in canada) and have no living parents. his brother will need to find his own way to immigrate to canada either through an economic or provincial nominee stream or apply for a study visa to go to school and qualify for PR another way after his education.

Thanks for the reply. I dont understand what my husbands status has to do with his brother..like why does my husband have to be single and the only one here? I dont quite get it.

To apply for a economic or provincial nominee, does that mean through a work opportunity or something?

His brother has to qualify for residency off his own back, for example he could be capable of a trade that is in demand.

Canada is not a free for all and so no one can just sponsor who ever they wish.

There is an exception known as the 'lonely Canadian' which is what CDNPR was referring to.

If you go here: http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/immigrate/sponsor/index.asp it will tell you who you can sponsor.

Select 'Sponsor your adopted children and other eligible relatives', then 'Find out if you are eligible'.

there's really no explanation as to "why" except those are the rules for canadian immigration.

here is the information on the CIC website:
http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/immigrate/sponsor/relatives-apply-who.asp

Option 2 – Other relative

You may sponsor one relative, related by blood or adoption, of any age if you meet all of the following conditions:

you do not have a spouse, common-law partner, or conjugal partner, or one of the following living relatives you could sponsor instead:
son or daughter,
parent,
grandparent,
brother or sister,
uncle, aunt,
nephew or niece.
you do not have any of the above-named relatives who is a:
Canadian citizen,
permanent resident, or
registered Indian under the Indian Act.
If the relative you want to sponsor has a spouse, partner, or dependent children who will come with them to Canada you must include them on the same sponsorship application.

If your relative does not qualify for sponsorship they may still be able to come to Canada as a skilled immigrant through Express Entry. Express Entry manages applications for certain economic immigration programs and selects applicants for their skills, experience and ability to contribute to Canada’s economy. Express Entry candidates may be awarded points for having a family member living in Canada. More information is available on the Express Entry web page.

there are multiple economic streams available to immigrate to canada. Yes, an economic stream is work related. I don't think provincial nominee is specific to a work opportunity. The cic website will be a good starting point for him to get an idea of how he can qualify. he is not eligible for family class sponsorship since his brother is married to a canadian and has parents alive. he can also go to the boards on this forum specific to express entry, foreign workers or provincial nominee. this board is not going to provide you with much information about those options.
