RQ suprise at the last hurdle. No way of submitting.

Hey everyone.

this is both a request for advice and to give a head up to people that may get this.

I applied for citizenship in december 2012 and took the test and interview in december 2013 at st clair.
I never received an rq in that time. I scored perfect on the test and was in the first few people to finish and go through. the interview was a bit of a chat about Canadian winter and she ended it with ill come take the oath in a few months....all good.

last week i had a family emergency. my father was in a critical state in hospital so i immediately left. I applied for a pr travel document ( my pr card expired last year but i didnt renew as citizenship was underway) when i arrived in england and it was issued in about 4 days.
my girlfriend called me from toronto saying a letter from immigration had come , but it was an rq not the oath letter. I am in england for the next two weeks sorting out a funeral etc and i am totally caught unprepared for all the documents they want at this stage.


These are my circumstances and id like to know how best to approach them.
I didnt need to work for a few years when i got here. I set myself up in a position where i could put time into music at least for a while. I didnt work or try to claim any money. This does mean that i have a 3 year gap of any employment.
i don't have and cant get rental agreements for a few of the years. there wasn't one and the landlord was basically absent. I saw them twice in as many years. I was fine with it as i could do any repairs and the rent was cheap enough that it was a great deal. this does mean i dont have any documents for it though.

i do have bank statements and visa card staements of purchaces in toronto during that time. is it worth getting them printed and sent?

my other and not ideal plan is to cancel the application as of the situation im in in england. renew my pr card and apply for citizenship in a few years. will cancelling hurt a future application?
this isnt ideal as im so close and also we....i want to be a canadian citizen. I live here, have friends, im engaged, a job i love etc.....
bad timing for the rq but shows it can happen.

The more im reading this forum, the more im inclined to think i should withdraw the application and reapply in a few years. this sucks as ive lived here pretty much constantly for 5 years, but getting all the documents they want will be near impossible and im not even back in canada for another two weeks.
ughh. this is so stressful and bad bad timing.

Withdrawing then re=applying will trigger another RQ, they specifically ask if you withdrew before on the application, not worth it, just go with the flow and give them what they want, you will get it sooner or later. what a messed up system that is....

As i didnt need to work for a few years i didnt file tax (as no income). This is one of the things they are asking for so righ tnow im trying to quickly find out how to file for previous years wit no income. the reason im thinking of reapplying is now i have a house im on the lease and have been here 2 years. im studying and have a job. so any rq later i can answer with no issue.
but yes. ive come so far i dont 'want' to stop now

I would not worry about that! just talk to an accountant, file for the missing years now, and write a letter telling them the truth. you sure have other ways of proving your presence. Not everyone is perfect story, and not every immigrant is a tax paying fat cow, don't be afraid, you have nothing to hide.

4. How did you get PR? FSW, PNP etc?

i think the goverment is nabbing people not being a tax payer. your self-employment or no job might have triggered this. they want to slow down the process for people who are burden in-terms of social assistance and medical previlege.

Yes. I had it renewed in 2013 and i have both

I had only left the country for two trips to see family in england in that time. 4 weeks absence in total

3. What was your landing date?
End of 2007 i revieved the pr card. I applied for citizenship
before the card expired
4. How did you get PR? FSW, PNP etc?
It was sponsorship through marrige. The relationship ended but we werw together for bout 5 years

Maybe that could be part of it. Ive contributed to the economy, never tried to claim any assistance and actually not needed to go to a doctor since i got the ohip card. But i get your point.
Im trying to find out how best to present this information. No t4s etc.

Im going to call them on monday and see if i can get some questions answered. Right now while the rq was issued im in england dealing with a family berevement and wont be back for another 10 days so im seriously weighing up withdrawing even at this stage as i dont see how i can get all this stuff in time.
I dont plan on leaving canada so reapplying after a few years of working full time and being a home owner seems appealing although will take years and years

First off, sorry for your loss. I believe your application for a PR travel document from England triggered the RQ. A call in to CIC stating you'd be out of the country to avoid getting the oath invitation would probably have taken care of this.

Look at it this way; an application from England must have got CIC wondering if the soon to be citizen (you) was actually living in England. They could also wonder if your PR card non-renewal was due to you being away from Canada. This is my opinion.

If I were you I'd see it through and send everything you've got that will help. Good luck!

Thank you. I did actually think that was the trigger. The rq was dated the next day i applied. I did call call them the day i fou d out i needed to leave to ask what my best move was and they suggested the travel doc. I also asked how citizenship was going as i didnt want to miss the oath and they said all cool. 5 days later i get rq out the counrty

Sorry for your loss...

In my humble opinion, if you can prove your 1095 days presence with your passport/CBSA records, then I think you should respond to the RQ in your best possible way and keep the application open. If you withdraw and reapply in two years, you have high chances of getting RQ again, and you would have lost two years of waiting anyway.

If, on the other hand, you don't have 1095 days, then yes, you should withdraw.
