I came here from the US in June, got married in November, and applied to extend my visit so I can wait for my Marriage certificate to do spousal sponsorship. I drove here in my car. I'm from NY. I'm trying to figure out how to get my car registered here in Ontario and can't seem to get a straight answer. Has anyone else done this and is it a hassle?

Until you are a permenent resident, you probably won’t be able to register your car until you import it. When you do get your PR, there are guidelines to follow in both Canada and the US. Your car will need to be on the RIV list of vehicles eligible for entry to Canada. You will need to make sure any recalls are completed and you have proof from the manufacturer they are done. You will have to export the car from the US and then import it to Canada. If the value is over $10K, you will need to pay tax on the value above that amount. Once I’m Canada, you will need to have it inspected and brought up to Canadian standards. Only then can you register it. More info here:

https://www.tc.gc.ca/eng/motorvehiclesafety/safevehicles-importation-usa-index-445.htm

https://www.riv.ca/ImportingAVehicle.aspx

https://www.cbp.gov/trade/basic-import-export/export-docs/motor-vehicle

It all sounds like a hassle, but it’s not that bad. Depends on where the car was made and how old it is. If it’s an older car, it may not be worth it after the inspections and repairs that may be required.

1. No, if the car is included in goods to follow, when the OP lands, there are no taxes or duties. The duty on taxes on goods over $10K is for returning Canadians.

I always thought it applied to everyone....always learning new things. Guess I should have listed some of my stuff in the wife’s name when I came back (sigh).

Don't know if you can answer this or not but..if I decide that I don't want to keep it and register it, can a friend from the US come and get it and drive it back? How do I make sure he has no issues at the border? I may buy a new car here in Ontario.

So if the value of the car is less than 10,000 do I have to pay anything? And what is the exact process to get it registered. For some reason, my brain is having a hard time getting it. Lol.
