Qorax,

Awesome and useful thread!

I'm planning to land in Jan 2010 from South Africa (SA). My wife is canadian(living with me in SA) and we've been regularly transferring money from my SA bank account to her Canadian bank account. Do I still need to show POF? If so, would proof of the transfers suffice?

Thanks

When completing your Record of Landing the official at the airport may ask to see proof of funds. Not everyone gets asked, but many do. The amount has to be in easily transferrable currency, preferably Canadian dollars but if not then US dollars, sterling or euro.

If you have a Canadian bank account I am pretty sure that showing the statements and balance for that Canadian account will suffice. As long as your wife is accompanying you to Canada then showing her account as proof of funds when your complete your Recording of Landing will be fine IMO.

We are considering transferring our funds to a Canadian account prior to landing if we're accepted for FSW1 (still awaiting AOR post-June-26 so it's still early days yet!), but it depends on the exchange rate at the time. We probably won't physically move to Canada until several months after landing because we'll have to come back to UK to sell our house etc.

Anyway, best of luck.

Wayne, Thanks for the reply. However I am landing before my wife gets to Canada(she has to finish some work before she can travel) and the account is in her name. I don't have an account in Canada. Just to be on the safe side I think I will take out US $ forex for the amount I need just in case...

The "original" a/c statement of your spouse's Canadian Bank will suffice, provided it has the required amount*. No matter she is landing with u or not.

*if the amount is less, carry some cash &/or a draft for the balance.

Proof of 'Landing' Funds:
-Do we take the Bank Statement or otherwise ?

Now, not all Bank Statements would be acceptable for 'landing'. There are instances when a Bank Statement was negated and the applicant was denied entry. I learnt it from the various forums & listening to the experiences of some families in Canada. Most 3rd world bank's statements will not be acceptable. Some examples were given, but I refrain to put-it-up here.

However, the statement/s of banks from UK, US, Norway, ANZ etc. were accepted in quite a few cases [I know of one personally]. Also, statement/s of International Banks [having a presence in Canada] were acceptable, viz. HSBC, Stanchart, RBC etc. But again, one case stated that their Citibank Statement was not accepted.

Hi Qorax,

Reference the above quote, have you ever known of an instance that statements from a UK bank (in this case, Barclays) were refused as POF on entry? I am asking this because I intend to carry the POF partly in cash with the rest in my UK bank statement. I don't like to have so much cash on me and will be relying on my credit cards for the first few days until I open a Canadian bank account. I have made arrangement to transfer the money from Barclays to my Canadaian bank account once I open it. Your perspective on this please.

1. I have opined always that carrying 'cash' & 'drafts' r better options, than a 'bank statement'.
2. I've seen one of my friends landing with a RBS statement & was accepted. Though she had a good amount of CAD with her as well.
3. I've also come to know many ppl getting into trouble with bank statements... serious trouble!

Hi There,

I've got SITUATION. sort of. plz. advise me.

I've lived in the UK for about a deacade. For the last 14 months, I had no job. Despite a hard search I couldn't find work as my visa got expired. Then home office refused my visa. I appealed and bla bla.... that's why no body was had been willing to recruit me..........NOW NUTSHELL, I borrowed for approx. £13,000 (GBP) from different banks and credit card companies to survive, u know
well .... now the point is, I have no money to pay them back. The funds i have to take for Canada Landing about $20,000/00CAD is now the only money I've had...... My Question is How should I take this {i read youe post [Proof of 'Landing' Funds:
from http://www.canadavisa.com/canada-immigration-discussion-board/proof-of-landing-funds-t39318.0.html ] already and am quite conversantnow with the procedure}

I can't return this money for now to the banks including HSBC AND CITI but will return later when i'm settled in canada.
I'm thinking of taking 10K cash and rest 10K [5K, bank draft+ 5K Travelles chq] .
Q. Do these Banks and credit card companies or debt collection agencies get or can get the details from these source TC and B.Drafts, if u stop paying

Q. Is there any other way to transfer money

Dear Friends,

I'd be landing in toronto in May, togather with my wife and 2 year old son. We intend to stay in toronto just for 4-5 days, with a family friend, so that we activate our immigration status and apply for PR-card. We'll go back to Norway after 5 days (after having entry stamp on our passports), and then I'll come back to Canada in Feb/March next year. Since, we'll be staying for just 4-5 days, do we still need to show cash funds of CAD 17000? I read on canada immigration website that proof of funds can also be in the form of stocks. But, I am confused that whether prints of stocks investment in my bank would be suffiecient to show funds, together with cas CAD 5000, and along with our return tickets to norway, which'll show that we'll not be staying in Canada for more than 4-5 days. Because, I don't know whether bringing CAD 17000 just for 4-5 days of stay makes any sense?. I am thinking of bringing CAD 5000 + proof of stocks

Please help me with ur advise on this issue.

Thanks in advance!

Q-2. Is there any other way to transfer money

A-1. No. If u have already obtained your 'final' PCC; & already have your PRVs - u r good to go.
A-2. Yes, u can 'open' a Canadian Bank a/c from overseas (see the Scotiabank thread).

Usually it's advisable to observe the "80-20 Rule"...
80% - in Bank Draft/s
20% - in Cash (or some TCs)

Hi sachin tandulkar of this forum:
A1- i've already had it.
A2-. Presently i am in UK and flying next month. I loaned from UK banks and if I open an account with Scotiabank.... wouldn't this be axing my own foot
Scotiabank will of course check my credit history which is Poor and they will definitely have to share this info. with UK Credit Agencies.....
Plz. jot down your veteran opinion....

some one replied on other thread:

Dear ,

you can go for ICICI prepared card(Travel card) from ICICI UK.

they will transfer all money to this prepared card (xchange rate apply) and they will give invoice stamped by ICICI bank to show officer at POE that you have x amount in the card.

you can use this card in Canada like local debit card. there is noe extra transaction fees if you use it in canada. there is no time limit of money you have to use in card.

whenever you want you can take money from card ( xchange rate apply).

Pls let me know if you need more help....

I did the same when i landed here from india. still I am using travel card like debit card here.

But it is up to you whether you want to go for it or not.

Cheers:::

toenjoy

That Canadian bank a/c WILL NOT be opened in the UK -- it'll be OPENED IN CANADA. Scotiabank (& the likes) just do the 'paperwork' from overseas.
