Assuming the father is residing in Ontario and has OHIP, the baby should be covered from birth without any need to apply at a Service Ontario office with the birth certificate.

1. You are not required to inform CIC of your pregnancy. It makes no difference to the app. You are only required to inform them of the actual birth.

2. There will be no delay.
thanks for the link! yes, my husband is Canadian citizen with OHIP so this should go through the automatic channels.

thanks, this is good to know. so it looks both you and your spouse are PR correct? My husband is Canadian citizen, so looks like b/c of that the baby will get his/her OHIP right away.
Hi, GG_wife,

I have not gotten my PR yet when I gave birth, only my husband is PR then. The nurse explained to me that my baby couldn't get his temporary OHIP in the hospital becoz I (the mother) wasn't a PR/CAN citizen. Hope the hospital in Ottawa could help you apply for the OHIP because of your husband's citizenship :)

breaking news! case type 27 might be eligible for OHIP according to some new information

on the 2015 inland thread a fellow forum member posted this:
"Guys we just came back from Service Ontario asing about the OHIP with OWP case type 27, the only thing that has changed is that before march 15 anybody needed a job offer.

Now we just need a letter of the company that states that we will be working for more than six months plus de OWP.

All that people that has been refused OHIP need to go to a full Service Ontario and told them which office refused to give you OHIP.
There is a lack of information but definetly we will be getting OHIP.

Ask for a Manager in there and you will get OHIP.

Info is fresh from today."

...

"I did not apply yet as I still waiting for my OWP but the manager said they are updating the info in all the centres!
He did said to remark which office refused to issue the health card, that the only thing changed is that before we did not need a letter from employer as we need now.

Tomorrow I have a meeting with the MP at 1:00 and I will ask him again.
Will update tomorrow after the meeting"

hello folks,

Those of you who are residents of Ontario, have pilot OWP there is good news: we are eligible for OHIP!
I've just got back from service Ontario (Ottawa, City Hall) with the confirmation I was eligible.

I needed to present 5 things:
-Proof of address: eg tenant agreement, bank statement arrived to current address, etc
-Work visa
-letter of employment
-document w/ my signature on it: I used my passport
-OHIP application form: this can be picked up at the city hall or downloaded from Service Ontario website

As for the pilot OWP I have, they could not care less if it is case type 20 or 27, they entered my immigration status in the system as : Foreign worker open permit
As for my letter of employment it did say it is permanent and full-time employment (they are looking for the guarantee that employment is for longer than 6 month).

It takes 90 days to get the health coverage and the OHIP card itself however they did not start counting the 90 days since my application date (Sept 9), but from the start of my employment date which is earlier (Sept 1) :)

The overall experience was that they were superhelpful and very efficient and I am a happy camper now!:D

Last year my spouse got her OHIP extended by a type 27 OWP. She had OHIP from her previous work permit but it was going to expire along with the permit.

We did not present any documents except the work permit and the regular 3 items for proof of residency and person.

This was when the OWP was very new though before AIP, and it's possible they did it wrong at the time.
