If anyone has an insight, please share. I just received an email from CIC.

"Thank you for contacting Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC).
Please note that the responsible office has returned the entire application with a letter of explanation to your address.

Please wait to receive the application along with the explanation letter for further details. You may visit our Help Centre and our website for more information. You can search by typing keywords.

Please do not reply to this email.

Sincerely,
Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada"

WHAT COULD THIS MEAN?! I have no idea why this would happen. We have a straightforward, American-Canadian Outland application. We are married with two tiny kids. I'm freaking out. This was the first I had heard from CIC.

Most likely there was a form missing, or a signature missing. It has nothing to do with being a straightforward application. If it's returned, it means that something was missing. It has happened to several members here.

Are you sure you aren't missing any document/information or left info blank (signature, info or even stuff where n/a should be)?
Did you just recently started your application?

If so that could be the reason why it's returned
They don't just reject you without any questions, asking for more proof, interview or notice and send it back.

So I wouldn't worry too much! :)

It can be any number of things, but hopefully...it's something really simple:

Outdated form(s)

Missing signature(s)

Incomplete payment

Missing documents (per the Document Checklist)

Missing photos (for the PR Card)

Oh...to add insult to injury, Canada Post is threatening to go on strike next Friday. Yay! ???

Good luck!

I'm sorry to hear this. I'm a May2016 applicant too.

Have you checked if you use all updated forms? One of the forms got updated around April2016.
Did you sign all the forms the needs to be signed - sponsor and applicant?
Did you submit all original forms?

As far as I know at this early stage, they only return if the application is incorrect or incomplete.

Thank you all. The fact that you all basically said the same thing makes me feel better. I was freaking out that it would be a refusal, but it sounds like that wouldn't/shouldn't be the case.

Now I just feel like an idiot if I just used an old form or missed a signature.

It would not be a refusal, because they probably hadn't started to do anything yet...other than check the application for completeness.

That makes sense. Thank you. Do you have any idea if, once I send it back, will it be put in the "back of the line"? Like, I'll basically be a late June applicant unsteady of May 20th?

possibly not. i think there's a letter in the package they sent that may be stamped with the original date and is suppose to go back into the package when you mail it back, so it may not go in the back of the line when you return it. also, when you get it back, check to see if they put a "due date". sometimes, they will use that date as a place holder and will continue processing then. unfortunately you won't know until you send it back and they start processing it.

Unfortunately, you will be at the end of the line.

I'm not sure if you'll even get it back by end of June. Combing CIC and Canada Post in the same sentence as `need my application ASAP', is about as big an oxymoron as you could find.

Thank you, I'm really hoping this is the case.

aren't they sometimes stamped with dates and not put in the back of the line? i thought i remember hearing about this a while back when they were sending back applications regularly...

Yeah, I understand that. Gah. I feel like an idiot if it's something minor

Some people have had theirs date-stamped, while others have been put at the back of the line. Hope for the best, but prepare for the worst.

Don't worry it will be okay. I had mine returned as I had miscalculated the fee's. After the initial shock and frustration I quickly sent it back. It was interesting to see what CIC does to all that fancy organizing we all put into our applications. Good luck
