Aye. I understand LICO.

But as someone mentioned, the general public is not in favor of parent sponsorship because they view it as a drain on the system.

So if you look at the politics, it's a balance between showing the public that the parents that come in are less likely to seek more than just healthcare eg welfare.
Welfare is completely irrelevant since for 20 years after becoming a PR, any welfare claimed by parents would be charged directly to sponsor/co-signer and not to the Canadian taxpayer.

The only burden to Canadians is essentially healthcare. Which is why nobody cares how close or far over LICO someone is, as all parents are equally likely to use the healthcare system which effects everyone.

You talk about the price of courier going up and long lines. Nothing wrong with that really isn't it? The reality is the demand is much higher than the supply. No point hiding that. Seeing those long lines makes who unhappy? The general public or the ones who are trying to apply?

As kkim604 said, what's a few hundred dollars in courier fees? Heck even a thousand? The old system showed who was really serious about applying and getting their parents here. Who could have the resources and commitment to really support and help their parents here in Canada.

Instead the Liberals have decided to make the process easy peasy, just give it a try, buy a lottery ticket style. How many Lottery winners do you hear about lose all their winnings in a year? Winning the lottery does not mean these people have any idea what to do with their money. I believe it might be similar with some who win the lottery to sponsor their parents.

To say that the courier fees are prohibitive and that distance is an obstacle to people trying to bring their parents to Canada is a joke. The fees and effort involved in finally getting parents to Canada physically far outstrips any of those costs.

If you can't navigate the old system and couldnt even get your application in, then too bad. Go try again the next year. Put more effort and commitment to the application process.

A lottery trivializes the whole process which is a massive insult to those of us who are totally committed to getting our parents here.
Beating a dead horse as the old system is gone and never coming back.

Can you imagine if they held lotteries for people trying to get healthcare because of long lines at the ED "looking bad" and not what healthcare authorities wanted to see?

Lottery for parents sponsorship is an absolute insult and is belittling to us trying for family reunification.

The word lottery only has a place when it comes to games. Like NHL 1st draft. Lotto 649 Lotto Max.

No where in serious issues do you ever leave things to a lottery!

For anyone suggesting that a lottery is the FAIREST way for parents sponsorship......

Let's see you allow someone to make important decisions for you and opportunities for you through a lottery system and see how you feel!

All those who share my sentiments, we must make our voices heard!
You are confused as to the difference between a right (healthcare) and a privilege (sponsoring parents for PR).

Again, beating a dead horse as the lottery is here to stay.

And I would create a new thread if you wanted to discuss your proposals for petitioning the government, as this thread should only be about questions related to 2018 PGP program (even though it's already derailed a bit).

Why not have a system that works on merit?

Granted, most of these older folk would be unlikely to enter the workforce or contribute to the economy but that is a PRESUMPTION.

Why not have a system that gives points to parents who have education. Work experience. Good health (important). Age.

Would people have issues with that? Some of these parents might still have experience in business and industry and can contribute to Canada. Some would even work if they were younger.

add in an element of merit, I think it would be beneficial to Canada.

For now. It was probably the same line people used when they complained about the first come first served system. The system is here to stay. I am surprised you are saying such things in a country like Canada.

If the Liberals lose the next elections, the lottery might go. So say the system is here to stay implies "forever"? That's ridiculous.

Your are trying to misdirect. Privilege or right, doesn't detract from the fact that leaving it to a lottery system is insulting and belittling.

What else are privileges? Having a job? Leave that to a lottery.

Privilege to be a member of parliament? Leave that to a lottery.

Privilege to represent Canada at the Olympics? Leave that to a lottery.

Privilege to own a car? Leave that to a lottery.

It's the fairest way isn't it? Well according to you.

PGP isn't considered family reunification, it's just sponsoring a relative and secondary to the family reunification the Liberals promoted, so the importance isn't there. Family reunification is spouse/children.

Yes the PGP system could be eliminated. I would expect that as the baby boomers age and the health care system is even more over capacity not sure that even 10 000 will be sustainable.
You could lower the age limit

Yeah I suppose in Canada the values are such that the children can't be bothered to consider their parents family anymore once they leave the house.

If Liberals lose next election, you are more likely to see PGP program slashed back to 5K cap per year, or abolished completely.

Lottery is the only fair way to give 100% equal chance to all qualifying Canadians coast to coast. My wife and I are thinking of eventually sponsoring her parents here, yet we don't find the lottery insulting at all.

Everything else you mention is based on merit alone and is not reflective of giving equal access to all Canadians, so not comparable whatsoever.

The PGP program is a privilege because it gives no benefit to Canada in general it is a drain of resources. It is a personal benefit for individual families. When someone decides to immigrate to Canada or another country they know that they may be separated from their extended family. When they become a citizen they can also move back to their home country to care for their parents. There are other options. If you had been selected last year I am sure you would be saying the lottery is a good change. In general life is not orderly or always fair.

I agree. This is the reality. Making it a lottery allows those with less resources and capabilities a better chance for sure.

However I disagree with Rob_TO when one moment he argues that PGP is a privilege. And then he talks about equal access.

You gotta decide which way it is. Often privilege is distributed based on merit less so through equal access. Unlike rights.

You're confusing people with the double speak.

When a decision to immigrate to a different country is made, you already know that you are leaving your parents in your home country.

Parents were never included in the family for the immigration process and it's not a hidden fact. It's a conscious choice.
