Hi @xylene , need some suggestions. My oath is on 16 May. So, I hope I should get Canadian passport by May end or June beginning. So there will be three months from June till Sept 1st week when I have to travel to India. Which option shown below is the best for me?

1) Apply and get OCI card in these three months. (I don't know whether it is 100% sure to get it in this time frame since I am not sure what are the reasons for delay of OCI processing.)
2) Take e-visa and travel and apply OCI after coming back from India (This will cause additional charges for the e-visa)
3) Apply for OCI in June and hope to get it before Sept. By any chance, if OCI is not obtained even by end of August, then apply and get e-Visa. But is it possible to do like this? (If this is possible, it is great.) Will Indian Consulate give e-visa or visitor visa while the OCI is under processing?

Thanks :)

3 months is good time frame to get OCI. Give 10 days for Canadian passport so you should get t by June. If you apply for surrender certificate and OCi on 1st week of June, you should get the OCI by End of July (based on typical timelines). You still have a buffer of 1 month.

Keep all documentation ready before Oath.

For (3) - you may want to call BLS and ask them.

Got a request for spouse Birth Certificate from BLS application for OCI in process. They won't accept birth Certificate in French. Now have to get it translated. Such a hassle when spouse is not even applying for OCI.

I agree that the requirement for wife's birth certificate doesn't make sense when only you are applying for OCI.
But translation is required as French is not an official language in India. Just like how the Canadian government ask for English or French translations for any certificates you have in other languages.

they are accepting translated copy with the original copt from a certified translator so that's good.

Hello, May I know why they are asking for Birth Certificate. It is not even in the checklist for adult.

They requested additional document that is Birth Certificate as spouse is not of Indian Origin.

Hi All,

Perhaps this question was already asked several times, but with 100 pages to go through, can't seem to find this information out. I recently received canadian citizenship and a passport. I'm now looking at the process to apply for OCI

I understand I can apply for Indian Passport Surrender and OCI at the same time. On the BLS website, passport surrender costs about $250 while OCI costs $425 (Toronto). So am I reading this correctly that the overall process costs $675 ?! or is the cost of the passport surrender certificate rolled up within the OCI?

Much appreciated!

Congrats on your citizenship! Yes that's correct. there is also a BLS fee that has to be added. You have to make two drafts if your mailing in your application. I guess you can pay by debit if you drop in to BLS. I just called up BLS and they gave me the exact amount for two applications.

Thanks, much appreciated! Though sucks to hear how expensive this process is gonna be. I’m planning to apply in person since the office is open on saturdays too (that’s atleast one saving grace!)

For a family of 3 (2 adults and 1 kid) it cost me 4300CAD from Canadian citizenship to OCI. :)

Yikes, I guess you probably kissed goodbye to atleast one vacation plan!

I was reeling from the sticker shock. I just paid 200$ for the Canadian passport, so I’m loathe to pay for the OCI immediately. I’ll wait a couple months as I don’t plan to travel to India until Christmas

I hv delayed applying for my son's OCI as its not worth applying for a 17 year old as OCI have loads of documents for a minor and then again renew at 20 years...

The renewal is only around 40$. If you aren't travelling in the near future it would be better to wait until he turns an adult.
