The government announced new targets for 2017 immigration.
For family category there's an increase of 4000 spots in 2017 for Spouses, Partners and Children and the new target is 64000 from 60000.
This is good news, more people will be approved and hopefully times will fall a bit.

That's great and all, but I have a feeling, just like many years ago, there will be lots of people getting approved in the first couple years or so, then there will be another massive backlog.

The plan is to increase gradually to 500,000 per year across all classes (if the minister gets his wish).

64,000 seems reasonable. The target now is 60 with 62 the maximum (they stated in news conferences 62). They are about 20 off of that (at the beginning of September). So maintaining ~5,000 issuances per month seems doable.

This is good to know! Thanks! Does this affect the applications filed late this year? If we submit our app this November, are 2016 apps gonna have a backlog? Just worried because since they've done this for 2016, some applicants from 2015 have not received their PPRs yet.
2015's and 2016's are being processed in parallel under SIR. It all depends on group # (check GCMS notes). They were grouped them out of order based on completeness and speed at which clients return documents requested and medicals.

If you have a boo in the 2016 inland thread, I just summarized 2016 so far..

Are those news conferences posted somewhere accessible? I'd be interested in listening to some of those.

So does the month of the app submission matter at all at some point? Thank you. I know it sounds unintelligent, but my husband and I were actually hesitant to submit the app this November because of the PPR trend in our VO last year and this year. Some, if not most, applicants from mid to late 2015 haven't received their PPRs and were stuck in the process. They were kinda thinking it might be because of the increased number of apps in 2016; they thought CIC took care of the apps in 2016 first, therefore leaving the 2015 apps behind. I don't know if it makes sense to you, but this is what's happening in our VO (outland). The fastest I knew had her VOH after 4 months; she was a June applicant. I just want to be positive despite this.. :)

Thank you..
Yours sounds like an outland app. The quota increase was said to target more inlanders for 2016. But that said, they have not stopped the wheels. Your VO may still churn out the applications at the same trend. Keep this in mind:

The CIC is not using a typical queue. A typical queue is a first-in-first-out (FIFO) -- like a bank. Consider going to the bank, and the teller tells you to go wait in the corner for 30 minutes and come back. Would they stop processing customers from the FIFO? Not a chance. They would have to close their doors in short order for poor customer service. Now, consider that 30 minute time in the corner equates to a medical. Would you want to wait in the queue for that person getting the medical?

I'm not that impressed actually, their target for this year was also for 300,000 so for 2017 it's the same. And all they did was shuffle the numbers, like refugees decreased from 55,000 to 40,000 for 2017 They just divided the extra 15k they took from the refugee class to the other classes. And the family class only increased by 4,000
