So your: submitting the application in March and getting the approval in December is not very realistic, as per what the estimated processing times listed on the Canadian government's website are.

Keep in mind that the application timeline has increased since March. So, for example, when I submitted my application in Nov 2023, the expected processing time was 24 months. The expected processing time is based on when they received your application. That means for me, it is still 24 months, even though the processing time has increased to 27 months for new inland applicants. Naturally, that also means that March applicants likely have a faster expected processing time than the Nov applicants (like me) from the same year.

The expected processing time is supposed to estimate the amount of time it would take you to get all of your response details together, too. If you are very expedient and provide your details back quickly, then you chip away at your overall processing time, too.

Is that true? for me the processing time has decreased since I applied, am I still locked in to the longer number you think? i can't see how someone would apply after me and get a shorter wait

Personally, I've noticed that they seem to process applications in batches? So tbh it wouldn't surprise me if the decreased processing time would only apply to new applications. But the processing time is just an estimate to begin with -- like I said before, they "budget" time for the applicant responses. For example, for a Quebec application, they budget 3 months for the CSQ process. It's common for applicants to get their CSQ approved within 1 month, though. Additionally, IRCC budgets time for you to get your Biometrics and/or medical scheduled and sent/processed. Conversely, time ISN'T budgeted for interviews, additional document requests, or returned/incomplete paperwork -- so any of those things would prolong your processing time.

This is why the estimate of 24 months that I'm looking at is closer to about 21 months as an actuality. And if they're ahead of schedule or my number moves up in the queue due to ineligibilities on other applications that would have been ahead of mine, then my processing time realistically drops down to maybe around the 18-month mark at best (as an estimation)
