If this is some kind of course or seminar that they're making you take when you're LEAVING the country, what possible purpose could it serve? I'm so curious to know what they would say in there. The only thing that comes to mind is some really serious-looking grumpy guy saying something to the effect of, "when you get to your new country, you better not give the Philippines and Filipinos a bad name or I swear I'll come hunt you all down!"

It says "The counseling session runs for a minimum of four hours and is meant to provide you with adequate information regarding inter-marriage and migration, the cultural and social realities abroad as well as available support networks for women in distress, among others."

Wow...four hours of that?
From the way they make it sound, it's like they think that people are about to leave the heavenly idyllic setting of Manila, and are about to be dropped straight into the seventh circle of hell.

I certainly have nothing bad to say. The vast majority of Filipino girls I've met were very nice, family-oriented, good moral values - so what's not to love? Canada should import more people like that, as opposed to some others who add nothing positive to the country.

Before I moved to my current place, I used to have a Filipino family right across from me (so our backyards connected). There were two sisters in their late teens/early twenties who were really nice. Every year in August on their father's birthday, they always threw him a big party, and it was always so cute the way they brought him into the backyard, completely blindfolded and then everyone yelled "Surprise! Happy Birthday!". I'm pretty sure that the first one was, in fact, a surprise, but after that, I think he knew that when he was being led into the backyard blindfolded, there was a bunch of people there waiting for him. But still, even though he knew, he still played along every year, and the girls continued to do it. It was really nice. Plus, on top of it all, those girls had fiercely awesome butts. :D

I suppose there are "horror" stories about anything and everything. I wondered if the counselling might be something to the effect of . . . "Don't let that Western husband of yours slap you around! Here's what to do and how to get help." - based on ONE horror story of misfortune that befell a particular Filipino bride;

Yeah...I suppose that could be it. But wouldn't the procedure in the Philippines be pretty much the same? Husband in the Philippines slaps you around, so you pick up the phone and call the police. What would make them think that in Canada, that same Filipino wife would have to jump through a thousand hoops to accomplish the same thing?

You see.. every Canadian I meet has some kind of story along the same lines. They met one Filipino, they were a nice person, they love Filipinos lol. It's good for them.. good PR. The perception is that they have good family values, are hard working, polite, nice, etc.. it's a huge part of their culture to get along with everybody and believe me that means everybody, there's a lot of freaking people there. After having spent a lot of time in the Philippines I won't be writing any sonnets. The perception of Filipinos in Canada is great, as it should be.

22-11-2013!
Ok, my wife had to take her seminar when she re-applied for her new passport using her new married name (my name) before the Philippines Government would issue it, so now she will go back to Manila before exciting the country, and just get a stamp in her passport as proof of having sat through the seminar.

The whole process around her getting her new passport was a total pain in the backside, we married in Calgary, then she went back home so we could apply for her to come back here. But when she got back to the Phil's that was when we found out about the report of marriage (after they got her passport) so that had to be taken care of because she wanted to change her last name from her Maiden name to her Married one. Which resulted in a seven month wait while the paper work for the ROM, moved at a snails pace from Vancouver to Manila, once that was done she finally got her passport released which was this past May (which was 11 months of being back home) there was another four month wait prior to that when we found a mistake on the marriage certificate from Alberta, which just happened to co-incide nicely with the postal strike here. Been a blast playing hurry up and wait so far.

Just finally glad to be on this last leg of paper work now!

It's sad.. every year it seems there's a story about a Filipina abroad killed by her foreign husband, the latest one I heard of was in California.
