I'm a bit torn as well. While I want it to be as fair as possible, you can ask what percentage of applications in the Family class are from Citizens and what percent are PR's? I would be willing to guess that for VO's like Manila, less than 10% would be from Citizens. I was sitting watching the local news with my Dad the other day, a piece about somebody who came over on a work visa and sponsored 5 kids and a husband and whoever else. My Dad who is a bit conservative said "the thing that bothers me is that somebody can come over here and then all of a sudden bring 7 people with them.. and then they can even bring their grandparents who don't do anything, etc etc." That's the public face of spousal immigration. So I said "Hey Dad.. do you think it's fair that I can sponsor my partner to come here" and he said yes he thinks it's fair. So then I said "well you know, that's the problem because people think that family class immigration is just immigrants bringing all their extended family into the country, but it also includes me and other people who married foreigners, even Americans are waiting in the same line."
My Grandparent's friends who are ultra conservatives in their late 80's think that if other people can bring 6 or 7 relatives into the country, I should be able to bring my spouse as a Canadian citizen.
I think part of the problem is people's perception that Family Class is starting the daisy chain - but the real root of the daisy chain is the Skilled Worker class of immigration.

I know discussions like this make people upset, especially PR's who have worked so hard to be here already. Especially since they worked so hard thinking of the promise that they could bring their family one day. Which is understandable. But if I went to their country as a worker I would have nowhere near the same rights, and citizens of that country would probably be even less understanding if I afforded the same privileges as them. PR's have it really good.. I think they are lucky that Canada is so generous. I have a cousin on a work visa in England.. wow, those are some tough rules.
I'm not opposed to PR's sponsoring their families. I just don't care that it happens at the expense of citizens. There is nothing to gain from citizenship so why should anyone bother? PR's reap the rewards that others have earned for them. That doesn't seem fair to me. Though I concede that it is a conclusion based more on the visceral than the logical.
Nominee's and FSW processing times are equal to or better than that of Family Class now. This is based on government policy and where they see value in immigration. They want new taxpayers and hopefully new voters.
If my wife had applied under either the Provincial Nominee or FSW scheme she would have been here months ago. This is what bothers me most.

Yes, that's the thing. Family Class is the scapegoat of conservatives, who would prefer economic class because in their opinion family class is just dead weight. But it's the economic class of immigration that starts everything in the first place.

To the Conservatives they see no valued added in Family Class. Just more dependents requiring government services. Make those applicants wait longer and the MOC's will just naturally wither on the vine. Who cares how it affects the majority of valid relationships.
Conservatives hate people.

I must only know tough cases. Last FSW I spoke took them 4 or 5 years to get here. Another one I know has had to work "unofficially" so much of their time here, they cannot possibly ever meet the requirements to get PR, and so will go home at the 11th hour when their time runs out. A very resourceful couple they are, if only she ever could have brought her husband here... Oh well...

Regarding the PR vs Citizen issue.....this one is pretty serious to me.

I don't have problems with PR's sponsoring, but I do have problems with being in the same boat, as I feel that PR and naturalized citizen cases should be a different category altogether.

I understand that they worked hard to get here, but in all honesty that is their choice to work to come here....granted that in most cases it's a choice for the better, it's a choice none the less.

As for born citizens.....we didn't choose to come here, and how we conduct our romantic lives sometimes leads us over seas....especially due to the downfall of family values in western culture.

Having said that, I know of several BIG foreign families literally raping the health care system, and forging on tax claims etc....so even though the government sees immediate economic gains from skilled workers, the long haul is disastrous. Bean counters usually can't see past 2 months though.

Before I get a public execution on the forum, I'd just like to say that I also have several foreign friends that know of my beliefs, and understand where they come from....just to say I'm not some one sided hick....I do understand both sides. But I do view that born citizens should have a different class and furthermore priority within that class.

Cheers!

I agree in principle, BUT... On the fraud side we have ALL seen or read recently of the marriage-fraud victims which leans towards a "let's not rush it" attitude for me. Secondly, sooner or later a PR applicant (say having waited 2 or 3 years) will be standing in the queue immediately before a Citizen applicant (have waited less, with your new plan), someone's going to find out and make the exact same post you just did... "Hey! There's a PR in my way ... Woe is me! Woe is me!"

See what I mean?

Yes and keeping in mind that my partner will hopefully soon be PR and I won't be lording it over him :p

Scos, I didn't know you had a direct line to Rooster! Currently he has climbed everything in the yard, including the car, and is sleeping in the coconut tree. I'm glad you guys worked out an agreement. He would do pretty much anything for some rice.

Good point but if citizens' spousal applications were processed by a different office then the applications of the PR and the citizen would never be competing for process placement. PR applications compete with PR applications; citizen applications compete with citizen applications.
