How many of you have learnt your spouse's language (if it is not English, and not the same as your mother tongue)? We speak English at home here, but I've been thinking that when (if?) we get to Canada, we should speak Russian at home. I figure we should speak English here, as it's practice for her, so she'll be able to find a job in Canada. She's also studying French, but that's been really slow-going. I'm working on my 4th language, although I don't think it will give me any particular help in the job world, it's more for my own interests.

I'm profoundly hearing impaired, so I sign (American Sign Language) along with speak English. Slowly teaching my husband ASL, key word, SLOWLY haha

My friend told their hotel staff in the DR that her husband is retarded in Spanish. He had no clue what she was saying, so he just smiled and nodded.

I am living in Tennessee with my husband and am trying hard to learn the "different" sayings they have here. I asked why people say "ink pen" (I thought all pens were ink) I have learned that it is because with the southern accent "pen" and "pin" sound the same.......

I'm Brazilian and my Canadian husband doesn't speak a word in portuguese and he is not excited to learn it... He said he is comfortable because I speak english and I play the translator every time he comes to Brazil.

My wife's English is perfect. She has never once asked me to learn Tagalog. I just want to be able to feel less like a tourist in nthe Philippines when we go back for visits.
