If you had immigrated directly through New Delhi it would be a different story. Coming from the US as a legal(?) resident your conditions are different.
may be.. but thats really weird..

Is that so ?
I mean they have different rules for people coming from different country ...

Canada itself is full of immigrated people then this kind of discrimination... not fair..
yes. if its like this.. different rules for different people then its not fair...

You are American I'm guessing. Different conditions apply when your spouse comes from a non-exempt visa country.
If only that were true.

When inquiring at RBC, who I have been a client of since I was a kid and who holds my mortgage and who I have access to about $80000 of credit, I was told that some credit histories are transferable from the US. Other countries depending on what countries they are getting a credit card is conditional prior to having a job. Credit cards are not a right. They are the property of the banks and they are given out depending on factors of risk. So if my wife needed access to credit right away I could have added her to my credit cards or she can wait until she is employed then apply for a credit card of her own. Since the goal really is for her to build her own credit then its better to wait until she can apply for her own card. We have a joint account and she has her debit card so she access to money as she needs or wants it.

yes, even I was told that I can give them my W2 (US tax return paper) and property paper... they will ask US credit bureau to check my credit IF I want higher credit limit. but I was okay with what limit they were giving me as a newcomer

That's a good limit. Did your spouse co sign? I'm just trying to figure out if there is any additional reason why you would have access to your own credit card right away.

A co-signer is someone that promises to pay your debt if you fail to thereby mitigating risk to the bank to allow access to credit.

Based on what I know the only reason why you would be able to instantly access a credit card would be that you arrived from the US and maybe your employment qualifications. Good for you though really. Establishing your own credit is probably the next most important thing to do after getting work.

I've been reading this long enough, might as well say hello.

Current time logged in: 10 days, 4 hours, 26 minutes. And the sad part is, I haven't sent in our application yet! (Nor will we be able to until next year. Argh!)
