If I may ask, where are you moving from. My car is paid for also but it has around 100k miles already. Other than that it runs well and it's 4x4. I'm just fed up with paperwork. I haven't discarded any options yet.
Estevan is right on the border! You are lucky!
Just south of Buffalo NY. Not sure if we're driving across the US and going through from ND or just crossing here at Queenston-Lewiston Bridge and driving across Canada.

Mine has about 97K miles and is a 2002, but it's been very well cared for so its in great shape, but with that mileage and age I wouldn't get much selling it.

Gotcha. So you are driving your car with a few things probably and your cats and a moving company will move the rest of your stuff? I'm thinking about doing that too just to save my vehicle. Decisions decisions

Yeah, I'll take some clothes and this computer along with the cats. The rest can come up separately, cause I really don't want to drive towing a trailer ever again lol.

I'm bringing my two cats with me, so driving it is. Not sure just what all I'll be taking with me yet because Estevan has an unreal housing shortage so we don't know where we'll be staying, (she shares an apartment with her sister now). If I am bringing furniture I'll hire a moving company.

I was just reading a thread on another site about importing your car, looks like a royal pain, but my car is paid for, in excellent condition and handles well in snow so I figure to import and keep it for a year at least then buy something.
It's a pain to the wallet than anything else!!!!

Tony and I are in the middle of importing his.. er, OUR car. Chevy Cobalt. Ohhh I hate GM :)

I'm trying to make the decision of importing my current car (90k miles but great condition) or buying a new one here in the US and bringing it over (by the time our app is processed it will be at least 6 months). What needs to be done to the cars to make it "Ontario ready"?

RIV letter (Recall Clearance Letter): $270 - For GM, other companies might be free or a lot less.
Importation Fee: $195 - This includes a Federal Inspection done at Canadian Tire
E-Test: $30
Safety: anywhere from 40-90 dollars.
You will also have to have your lights changed to have daytime running lights to the point where you cannot turn them off unless you turn your car off. This HAS to be done BEFORE the federal inspection.

You'll need the title and the KBB value of your car. Check these out.

nice... you will be heading west while we are heading east! :D
we are driving too and selling everything and starting over. It's a lot to deal with and adding three kids to it makes it just that much harder! Our car is all paid off and we sold our second car already so it made sense to at least have a car but I will let you all know if it was really worth the hassle! I have already ordered our daytime running lights and I'm going to instal them before we move so that is just one less thing to worry about. The crap thing though about turning the move into a 2 week road trip is that we will have to wait till the week we are leaving to get the dealership paper... yeah cauz I won't have anything else major that week... like selling the rest of our stuff, packing the car, cleaning the apartment and Easter... yeah easy! But on an exciting note... 42 days till we move!!!!! :D :D ???
oh and did I mention that all 5 of us all got a nasty flu bug...all at the same time this weekend.... :-X Yeah not cool!!!!!!

Hmmm my Valentine's weekend has been awesome. Hubby just took me for dinner. Sushi and lobster. Nom nom nom nom.

I had a 1993. Not worth importing. Plus a truck kinda sideswiped me two weeks before moving and ruined the car.

yeah we figured that it would be cheeper to import our paid for car and even if it only last a the year (but I'm pretty sure it will be kicking around for years to come) then to have to try and get something asap upon our move up. I won't lie... A big part of it is that I wand a newer and bigger vehicle (what you say?? You don't love cramming 3 car seats into the back of a 2 door echo Mamee??... um yeah I'm about done with that one!!!) and I would like to have some credit established so we don't get screwed over on interest rates!!

That's basically the same way I was thinking. My wife doesn't drive so if I didn't take my car I'd have to buy something ASAP and I can imagine how I'd get reamed on the interest rates. Plus since she's going to have to get her licence, (unless we get lucky and snag a place near where she lives now), she can have it after I get a Jeep.

And I can relate to the car seats, I used to have to get 2 of them into a Ford Probe :D

I'm somewhat relieved I don't have to worry about car-anything. My husband bought a Mazda 3 Sport we named Shiro, and I'll be flying across the world once I get approved. I'm gonna be shipping most of my things though, and that's the bit that scares me. :(
