A friend of mine applied for citizenship in August, 2013 and just received his citizenship certificate/had his oath ceremony last week. That's less than 6 months! Looks like processing times are getting better...
(Mind you, he applied well after staying the required days, never left Canada, and has been a full time employee for almost 5 years now.)

Well, it is speeding up for some people in some places. I know people who applied well before your friend who haven't even had the test yet. These kinds of discrepancies based on geography/region should not be acceptable.

I think if you have full time and never left Canada it will be very fast, here is my timeline

Scarborough Office

We received your application for Canadian citizenship (grant of citizenship) on July 18, 2013.

We sent you a letter acknowledging receipt of your application(s), and a study book called Discover Canada on July 18, 2013. Please consider delays in mail delivery before contacting us.

We started processing your application on October 2, 2013.

We sent you a notice on February 7, 2014 to appear and write the citizenship test on February 21, 2014 at 11:45 AM. The notice you will receive by mail will be your official confirmation of your appointment. If you have not received this notice prior to the date of your scheduled appointment, please contact us.

I never left Canada in 10 years, full time job during PR time, single applicant...I was surprised when I got my test letter less than a year

Hi there,

It depends on office and also how you have completed your file. Mine citizenship processing time was 7 months.

I left Canada twice before applying for my citizenship and also mention that 2 trip on my applicant still it was done within 7 months.

I went out of Canada 1st for 115 days and 2nd for 45 days. I guess its not like you can't or don't go out of Canada unless you got citizenship.

Good Luck Everyone

Well that's not the case at all, not even close......Canada is such a beautiful country and there's a lot to see, i mean lots to explore.....

I use my vacation days to travel and explore the amazing places right here at home....

Ever traveled to all the way up north, to Yellow knife etc....Go and spend a week, you will fall in love after you see the gorgeous northern lights in the middle of the night, mid Feb winter, sitting on a hot seat, having local game meat and drinks......

Been to the rockies....breath taking.....save up some money and do at least the 7 day rocky mountaineer trip.....Amazing, words cant describe, out of this world...do it in aug/sep, when you can see the different colors on trees and the green, blue and white colored rivers side by side....

Been to St Johns?? Beautiful city...FYI, oldest city in North America.......you deck your car in a ship if you are driving to reach that island....

I can go on and on and still wont finish lol.....It will take least 5 vacation calendar years to fully explore lol...my company doesnt give me enough vacation days ??? ??? ???

There is nothing wrong with PRs traveling outside of Canada. It does not mean we're less worthy for citizenship as long as they have met the qualifications.

I will say that it is probably not a coincidence that processing times have gotten radically faster right as the new citizenship bill was announced.

He lives in Toronto.
His application was first at St. Clair, then it was transferred to Mississauga.

I don't think the faster processing times have anything to do with number of absences. It has to do with local office. I know people whose applications made it out of Sydney without an RQ, but who are still waiting months and months for the test.

Yes it seems which office is processing the application is a big factor. I had been fortunate to have my application sent to Mississauga, one of the fastest out there. Took ~7 months and this is with tons of travel outside Canada all around the world. Other big factors are holding steady full-time jobs for reputable employers with no gaps in employment.

What's the connection?
It's very politically convenient for the Tories and the new Bill ("look how things are already speeding up and we haven't even passed the bill yet!")
I don't think that it is a coincidence. The conservatives are very good at managing the media and staying on message.

Here's their narrative:

1. So many immigrants are frauds!
2. We're cracking down. (RQ, revocation, etc.)
3. We're cutting CIC staffing levels while adding to the workload.
4. Record high backlogs. Record processing timelines.
5. Month before cit bill proposed, everything suddenly becomes 5x faster
6. We're already speeding things up (after slowing them down). Imagine how fast things will be after we pass this new Bill.

Create a crisis to solve a crisis. Demonstrate some competence/speed with the new applications. Narrative= tough on frauds, competent, problem solvers.

It behooves us to be wary of this message. In my opinion, the narrative should be "We'll delay or withhold your rights if it will help us win elections." "We'll subjugate government function to political gain."

There have been some ATIP releases http://residencequestionnaire.wordpress.com/atip-releases/ as of late showing a level of mismanagement around the implementation of the revamped RQ which strains credulity. It's hard to view it as anything other than deliberate. A deliberate slow down to get stories in the press about the "fraud crackdown" and create a huge backlog and unprecedented processing times. The designers of the revamped RQ said that they we're startled to see it used in 20-40% of cases as it was designed for the "worst of the worst". They had no capacity to deal with 500 pages of documents when 10 used to do the job. Deliberate.

And what's happening now? Things are fast. The CIC is suddenly 5x more efficient? Right before the cit bill is introduced? It's too perfect. And it belies the oft-repeated notion of how the Minister is "raising the value of citizenship".

It cheapens citizenship to use it as a political pawn. My right to vote in my daughter's school board election should not be subjugated to some politician's election strategy. That is base. It's below the dignity with which citizenship should be regarded.

well said eileef...makes one feel dirty .used...manipulated.....and generally induces a certain visceral disgust...

Aretha franklin....R...E...S..P...E...C...T ! ? and what about Trust ?

NOT ! ......and Heavily Shaken (respectively)

But, somehow...somewhere...whatever the naysayers say (which is nay ;D) what goes around does come eventually around....it most definitely does... EVEN the "invincible" tyrants and dictators the world over were eventually reduced to nada - we have an example just this week. So, let's look beyond and have faith in our democracy....

Some............where over the (Fall 2015) .........rainbow ? ! ;)
