Long-Distance Relationship

Hi all,

I am currently in a long distance relationship with my gf from the U.S.. We have met in person and want to continue our lives together and have decided for her to come live with me in Canada. Unfortunately just read about all the restrictions :(

We really would appreciate your help as to finding our best option. We are currently trying to save money and hopefully have enough for her to move here comfortably next year. We have done some research and think that she should move here as a visitor then extend the visit until I can sponsor her as a common-law partner and then we can both work and live here together.

Is this a good option or is there something better? It would be much better if she could move here and work but it doesn't seem possible in our circumstances until she is a permanent resident.

Thank you everybody for your help,

Please help :(

US visitors can get a six month visa then renew. The burden of proving a common-law marriage can be daunting.

I would think the best could get an open work permit, depending upon what work skills are needed in which province. Otherwise, both move to a boarder town and start establishing documentation about your relationship. Like Tsawwassen, British Columbia and Point Roberts.

It would be quite a long process.

Sorry to say.

I think the best option is that she gets a work or study permit by herself, come to Canada, and make the history to cohabit with you for 12 months. You must care of keeping all documentation that could be proof of relationship. She could stay on visitor status renewing every 6 months but I'm not sure if it's healthy way to live as I have been waiting for my Open Work Permit for months sitting at home. The other option is getting marriage and once you prepared all required documents, submit PR application with her OWP. It's unfortunately 11 months as of now to get 1st stage approval and issue OWP though..

Yeah if she gets a study permit or just comes up as a visitor or vice versa.. Unless she can manage to apply for a work permit (requires LMO usually) but it shouldn't be a problem for her to extend her stay. As long as you guys can prove you have lived together in a consecutive period of 12 months OR get married and apply a little bit after you should be good. Like somebody already said it is unfortunately a waiting game and it plays and puts our patience to the max but it can be done. So if you're able to support the both of you while she stays here with you and then apply either inland or Outland. At the moment (if I'm right) both takes about the same time to process, but with inland she's granted an open work permit and health care after stage 1, plus she can stay on implied status as well. Just to give you some ideas :)
