Sorry to hear that Edgehead78. That's the most common problem CIC has with applications, too.
I have good news from my end. On Tuesday, we got my partner's 5th visitor record extension, so he's good till January 10 next year. Optimistically, he could have his PR by then. I was nervous about this one, since I've been told many times that the more extension you get, the less likely they are to approve them. Last year, we thought we were about to send the PR application days after the VR extension, but we ran into roadblocks and didn't get it sent. This time, I told them that SA should already be done by the time they processed the VR extension, so I was very happy that that was indeed the case.
I was worried about a few other things on that VR extension. I had written in the cover letter that bank statements were enclosed, since I am self-employed and couldn't send a letter of employment, but I forgot to include the bank statements. Apparently, that didn't concern them too much.
We mailed it on the very last day of the previous VR's validity (actually late the night before), but we've done that before with no problems, so that didn't concern me too much, even though they say to send it a month before. Last year, I thought to double-check the expiry date one evening and found to my horror that it expired that day! Since the mail had already gone out, we went to do it online and I paid the fee, only to find that the online application now required the payment to be done in the middle of filling out the forms, so I had to pay it again. This left us with two receipts from last year, so I was a little worried that I might have sent the wrong one with this year's application, but I was fairly certain from the date stamps on the receipt emails.
My partner has filled out all the forms for the CSQ, so as soon as I get paid from my last job, we can hopefully send that away.
