you have to understand application for PR is far higher than the country of the non-canadian spouse. most people are trying to come to canada for a better life. no one has forced anyone to come to canada. if one thinks it's too tough, why not go the other route and apply for citizenship of the spouse's nation. even then the couple can stay together.

It is not discrimination. Canada, like EVERY other country in the world, is not required to give non-citizens the same rights that it gives its citizens.

I have lived in several other countries and never had the same rights as the citizens of those countries and never felt discriminated against. I lived in my partner's country for several years without equal rights and never felt discriminated against.

If you believe Canada is so inhumane, discriminatory and atrocious, go live in your spouse's country.

Some people (maybe the really smart ones) find a way to work remotely via the internet. As long as the person is paid OUTSIDE of Canada, it's not a violation with CIC/CBSA.

Voila! Problem...reduced, if not solved.

Applying for and becoming a PR of Canada is a privilege, not a right. So there are no human "rights" being violated anywhere.

A country is free to put whatever measures they deem fit when it comes to spousal immigration, in order to prevent abuse and fraud of the system. This is done to protect it's own citizens first. They could make the processing times 10 years and still no human rights violations would be occurring.

The way to show your displeasure for Canada's current immigration rules is with your vote, and/or petitioning to your MP.

Canada is in no way required to give equal rights to foreigners.

Genocide is an atrocity. A few thousand people having to wait a few year for PR in Canada is about as far from atrocity as you can get.
The atrocity is that there is no transparency in this system. The atrocity is that there is no accountability. The atrocity is that the rights of law-abiding, taxpaying Canadian citizens as sponsors are placed below the rights of refugees or foreign students (see right to healthcare of spouses). The atrocity is that a minister can keep on lying in Parliament with no consequences whatsoever. The atrocity is that the life of applicants is put on hold for indeterminate duration with absolutely no information as to how long and why they are kept waiting. The atrocity is that people in this process are going emotionally, mentally, financially bankrupt.

I am from an ex-communist country and can say it based on my own personal experience: this is like being there in the seventies. Look around this forum, read the desperate, clueless, confused posts. There is real suffering, there are real personal tragedies. This is Canada, where one would expect to be treated according to the norms of a civilized country. To talk about genocide is a mockery. Or should one think of Canada being comparable to those places?

If Canada wants to treat aspiring immigrants as dirt it should advertise it clearly.

it's same as other countries. Even in US, temporary residents get Fiance visa while PR spouse related F2 visa has an yearly quota on it. So if you are from a country which generates lot of application, you may be delayed a lot. no difference to Canada, but at least Canada doesn't have a yearly limit.

Your use of "atrocity" is a mockery. None of what you have stated is an atrocity. It sucks for many people but they CHOSE to do this; they had other options but chose this one.

I took the time to check it out, beside others it means heartless, wicked, cruel, bad acts or actions. Where is the mockery?

People did not knowingly choose to be subjected to a procedure where the only rule is that there are no rules and the only certainty is that what was true yesterday is no more true today. Forget about the aspiring immigrant, he/she is apparently expendable, most likely a criminal or at least a potential scammer. But why does the country treat its own citizens the way it does? What is the rational explanation for the lack of transparency?

Are you defending this sort of attitude? Are you saying that yes, Canada is no better than a one-time communist country in its treatment of its own citizens? That it is very much in order that its citizens have no access to information that is crucial for their own well-being? That instead of a clearly defined procedure taking place one is told to seek out one's MP for help in a completely muddled up situation?

Sometimes the defense does more harm than any attack....

the system was quite open few years back. but people started misusing it. even till 2007, fiances/es could have sponsored to canada. what you are viewing is a shift in majority who aren't open to large immigration at this point. economic situations hasn't helped in the case as well. citizens can always elect the ministers who share their own viewpoints.

i believe immigration is canada will slow down a lot in coming years as the privileges and lifestyle changes. there's already been talking about updating health care and CPP system. may be people won't be so eager to move here as cost of living increases.

again, there are two individuals involved. if you think immigrating to canada is tough, why not move to spouse's land? reason is people are moving to canada because it's more lucrative and it creates a bigger backlog.

I don't mind private individuals making any amount of assumptions, thoughts are free. As for myself, I chose Canada because of the vast distances, the open skies in the prairies, the friendly smile of people in small rural stores, still beautiful nature despite all the hard work and efforts to ruin it - things that might count as rubbish for many. As for being lucrative, I would not be so enthusiastic. It depends of course on the basis of comparison.

However, it is outrageous for a government body to mistreat masses of people because there were some who abused the system. A civilized country responds by closing up the holes, so that abusers can not get in. A communist country responds by punishing everybody attempting to go through the procedure.

They (we) knew, and still line up by the tens of thousands (15000 in the queue now according to you) to come here. I was expecting 2 years, before I even looked at any related / pertinent web-pages on the matter.

And "closing up the holes" takes time and resources.
