I thought people in Alberta didnt need to wait for AIP to qualify for health care

My wife called the AHS to extend her healthcare. She has 3 more months for the healthcare. I dont think she will be able to extend it again.

This happen to us today: My hobby and I were at the registry office in Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta requesting his AB Health card. We provided all the documents we though we need (work permit, passport, AIP letter from CIC), then the registry agent called me an hour later to ask for my "Positive First Decision letter" we got AIP already is that the same????

Yes thats the one. Also, besides that, you have the work permit, that alone is sufficient. You can get a SIN with your work permit in the registry.

Yes thats it but you could have had health coverage all this time. People on visitors visa in Alberta has health coverage...I found that out from someone on the FB page who lives there...which sucks for people like us in Ontario who have to wait for AIP...but good for you guys

As far as I know, Implied status is doesn't work.

In Alberta as long you have a valid visitor record, you can be added under your spouse' health coverage.
When my wife first came, I just took her passport in and got her added to my health coverage. After 6 month I have extended her visitor visa twice and both time went to the registry and re-new her health coverage using the extended visitor visa from CIC. Hope this helps.

Sorry, got busy and had to step away.

ACS, I do not know where the work permit application was sent, sorry. Hubby did it and he's not as thorough at keeping documents as I am. We did not apply with our application. I thought we had but turns out we didn't. It seems as though you will get your work permit though since you applied online. I hope that's the case. Fingers crossed!

As for the driver's license and health care, he has tried several times at about three different locations. The last time he went with his SIN, his work permit and the sponsor approval. Didn't work. He was told they will not accept an email and the work permit and SIN didn't help. They need an official letter from CIC, which CIC does not do. I've requested one but nothing yet. I phone weekly to see if anything has been done, but nothing. Until this email today. He had a long chat with an agent today and was told that this new email should work. So, he's going to try again. He is on my employer health coverage since last year, which helps, but still no AB healthcare. He had a health scare and was in the hospital after we received the first email (within days, actually), so I'm hoping that the stay will be covered retroactively. Not sure though.

Hope that answers the questions that were posed to me. I can't say enough what a lifeline this forum has been. Thank you for sharing all your experiences guys. Here's to hoping they stay on this roll they've been on and also speed up processing. Good luck everyone!

As far as I know, Implied status is doesn't work.

I can confirm this. With a valid entry document and an application submitted, even as a "visitor" your spouse can be added to Alberta health care for as long as the stamp in the passport allows. You must do this within 90 days of entering the province. If you extend your visitor record, Alberta health care can be renewed for as long as the visitor record is valid (sometimes a year or more). Alternatively, if your spouse is able leave the country and return, you can also apply for Alberta Health Care again.

If there is a problem with your application for health care after you have submitted your paperwork at the registry, Alberta Health probably WILL NOT contact you. After 2 weeks of hearing nothing, contact Alberta Health Care Insurance Plan (AHCIP) by phone (http://www.health.alberta.ca/AHCIP/contact-AHCIP.html),

Be prepared to read the Alberta health care insurance act (http://www.qp.alberta.ca/documents/Acts/A20.pdf) and the associated regulations (http://www.qp.alberta.ca/documents/Regs/2006_076.pdf). Read section 5 of the act very carefully.

The agent may tell you why you were denied. If not, ask why.

Now that you have read through the legislation, you know that your spouse is legally eligible for health care. Show them that you know enough about the rules, then they will stop trying to snow you with excuses about how visitors are ineligible. I fought and won, you can too. It will probably save us thousands of dollars when our baby is born next year.

Yes, common law spouses are allowed to be added to your AHC account.

Long time i ddnt post bcz i ddnt have any update and my situation was bit complicated.

I want to share my experience with all members ,

Am February applicant 2013
I receivd AIP 21st January 2014
1st Landing letter 14th August

My husband was out of the country for 2 months JULY AUGUST, i called CIC and cancell the appointement.

I receivd call from CIC on the 7th October notifiying me that my landing will be on the 14 October,
at this time my husband was still out of the country, his mother was sik and prospond his return.

I called CIC to cancell again my 2nd appointment.

On the 27th October i receivd a letter saying my landing will be on the 13th November at 1000 AM, ste Antoinne Montreal and the letter also saying this is your second and last notification for your landing appointement, in case you dont show up your file will be closed.

My husband was back and i landed on the 13th November , last thirsday. the normal 3 questions, by 10H20 we walked out from the office.

The Agent ask my husband for his passeport and she cheked his last entry to Canada it was the 13th October and asked him why we ddnt show up to the previous appointements and she was sure that he was out of the Country, and she gave me the papers COPR to sign and she congratulate me , than she told me you will receive your PR Card after 4 weeks. and that was that. its over.

She asked me also for my working permit , she took it and she asked for my old permit visit extension it was issued February 2011, I said i dnt have it with me , she asked if i still have it at home, i said yes, she told me i want you when you back home to destroy it , its very very important.

This is for the person who was asking about the work permit and expired passport.

When i applied last year February 18th 2013, i ddnt submit WP with my application, my passport expired May 2013, i renew it at the consulat i recevd my new passport august i sent a copy of the new passport with WP application. When we receivd AIP , i receivd also my WP after one week in a snail mail.

thats was my experience , i hope it will help someone in the same situation. dnt hesitate to ask me any question i will be always here with you guys. i wish all the best for everyone, and thanks to all members for help and and support provided thru this forum.

Thanks for sharing the information nadouy2014! Did u try to leave with him together before landing? Did ppl at the customs ever try to stop u when coming back?

No i never left the country while my application was in process bcz am from country which required visa to canada.
